  • My Prediction of BA's 2017 Top 100 Prospects

I do this every year because I think it's fun. Usually, I get around 90-91 right and all but 1-3 of the others are on my "possibles" list. BA unveils the 1st 50 of its Top 100 tonite on the MLB channel at 9 PM and will post the full list later after the show is over. An interesting item this year is that I project that noone from the California League will make the top 100. If so, this may be the first time noone from a full-season league made the list.

Yeah, you have to be excited about the Braves near future. I project them to have the most on the list with 9, which would be one of the highest totals ever. And they have several more very good prospects that I dont think will make it, like Fried, Patrick Weigel, Austin Riley and Demeritte, as well as some others. If Maitan makes it, I think he'll be the 2nd-youngest player (he just turned 17 y/o) ever on the list behind Miguel Sano.

Well, I did about as well as I usually do. Got 93 of them correct and 3 of the ones I missed were among my possibles. Guys I missed:
        - C Gillaspie
        - B Garrett
        - A Morejon
        - J Dunn
        - R Tellez
        - L Gurriel
        - B Woodruff

Shocking that Lourdes Gurriel was ranked and his brother wasnt. Woodruff also was surprising; havent heard much top prospect buzz re: him altho Keith Law had him at #100 on his list. A bit surprising that Brady Aiken didnt make it at all.

2 MLB teams were shut out: KC and the Angels. Braves had the most w 8, the Yanks had 7 and the Brewers had 6. 56 NL and 44 AL. 56 hitters and 44 pitchers. No relievers made the list.

Indeed, noone from the Cal League made the list. That may be unprecedented for a full-season league.

Thanks so much for your efforts, always appreciated. Do you know how the NL/AL split compares to prior years? I'm guessing that's a function of more rebuilding teams.

It's a little bit more skewed than usual but not too much. A 53-47 split seems more typical.

In 2016 he had 130 AB.

Per MLB.com: "Determining rookie status: A player shall be considered a rookie unless, during a previous season or seasons, he has (a) exceeded 130 at-bats."

                It appears that he is.

Hard to calculate the relative value of a player who is likely to only have 2-3 more prime playing years, vs guys with a decade plus of potential contributions ahead of them.

Yeah, he's #16 on my list.
