  • AL Keepers

Our AL 5x5 keeper league (12 teams) allows 7 keepers. Total budget $260. Which 7 would you keep? And how do you rank them?

    Mookie Betts $18
    Tim Anderson $8
    J.D. Martinez $20 (must keep)
Danny Salazar $5 (option or extend?)
    Edwin Diaz $11
    Kelvin Herrera $10
    Mark Trumbo $22
Marcus Stroman $7 (option or extend?)
    Nate Jones $3
    Geovany Soto $1

Presumably I will try to trade the extras, though that rarely works. But if instead you would package one of the top 7 with guys not in the top 7, please let me know. Thanks for your feedback.

    How many teams? 10? 12?

    Mookie Betts $18
    Tim Anderson $8
    J.D. Martinez $20 (must keep)
Danny Salazar $5 (option or extend?)
    Edwin Diaz $11
    Kelvin Herrera $10
    Mark Trumbo $22
Marcus Stroman $7 (option or extend?)
    Nate Jones $3
    Geovany Soto $1

Tough to decide between Anderson and Trumbo for #7, but I'll go with Anderson as he gets you the ever-undervalued SB and has a chance to be a more valuable keeper in 2018, or a trade chip mid-season to a rebuilding team.

12 teams. Would you extend Stroman or Salazar?

I would see if I could package up Trumbo & Martinez to a team whose keeper list looks very light on power in order to accommodate Anderson.

Extending pitching is always a gamble. I would not extend Stroman and in the fence on Salazar.

This. Though I don't extend either pitcher. Salazar's elbow is dicey, and I'm not fully bought into Stroman's best shape of life rhetoric.

Thanks Jason. Why Jones? I thought Robertson was still there (for now). I figure Anderson is a no brained given opportunity and speed.

Jones has excellent skills and once the White Sox move Robertson, he gets the job. Read this:

With established players fleeing the south side of Chicago like their hair’s on fire — like any good rebuild, honestly — it’s a little strange that one of the vested veterans left standing is closer…

To piggyback -- 12 AL only, obviously don't need three closers. Actually only need one. I'd deal either Herrera or Diaz and keep Jones. You'll be able to get a nice keeper for a cheap closer and you'll have the 1 1/2 closers needed to be in the upper half of saves.

Thanks a lot, everyone. Another owner is seeking offers for his players:
                    Odor $13 final year
                    Bogaerts $13 final year
                    J Bradley $11 final
                    C Correa $8 option year

He said he wants "an insane offer" for Correa. Do you think JD Martinez, Salazar, and Herrera/EDiaz gets it done?

Or would you just concentrate on Odor and offer one of the closers (Herrera or Diaz)?

If you can get Odor for just one of your closers, I'd be all over that deal first.

I did a deal for Odor. Now my keepers are down to 8. I can only keep 7. Probably go with the first 7, but appreciate input. They are due noon Friday (tomorrow)

                        Mookie Betts 18
                        Rougned Odor 13
                        TAnderson 8
                        JD Martinez 20 (must keep)
                        Mark Trumbo 22
                        Edwin Diaz 11
                        Danny Salazar 5
                        Alternate: Nate Jones 3

I figure Trumbo would go for 29 or 30 in our league. Jones wouldn't go for any more than 9, but I could trade him now. I could probably get some decent minor leaguers for Jones (Francis Martes). Or I could keep Jones over Trumbo or Salazar; could get same deal for them I imagine.

                        Any reactions? Thanks!

Go with your first instinct. Top 7 look great. Good team to start with.

Agree. I really like Nate Jones to close at some point, but the top 7 is one impressive keeper list to be going into an AL-only with. Power, speed, counting stats, and even enough BA to compensate for Trumbo and Anderson. Add in a decent SP and an up and coming power closer. Yum.

Thanks a lot guys. Appreciate it.

I might be able to flip Jones for Anthony Alford (minor leaguer but $8 when activated). Any thoughts? If not, I drop Jones.
