  • Fringy keeper options

    The required keepers and no-brainers have been done, see below. What is left are the options. To exercise or not to exercise, that is the question?

    Jim Johnson Atl - RP (286)
    Nate Jones CWS - RP (318)
    Cheslor Cuthbert KC - 3B (933)
    Ozhaino Albies Atl - SS - (1435)

    The numbers are initial Y! rank. The cost is the 16th then 17th round picks in a 16 team league (using holds). So, pick #256 for the first option and #272 for the second. Cost advances 4 rounds per year, so options for two more years. Are any worth the cost?

    These are the others in their draft slots. Three keepers are unrestricted and mandatory.

    Paul Goldschmidt Ari - 1B - K
    Robinson Canó Sea - 2B - K
    Ian Desmond Col - OF - K
    Andrew McCutchen Pit - OF - 4
    Traded 5 - Dellin Betances
    Christian Yelich Mia - OF - 6
    Carlos Carrasco Cle - SP - 7
    Pick 8
    Pick 9
    Yasmany Tomás Ari - OF - 14-->10
    Carlos Rodon CWS - SP - 13-->11
    Lucas Giolito Was - SP - 12
    Sean Manaea Oak - SP - 10 (148)
    Aledmys Diaz StL - SS - 11 (159)
    Orlando Arcia Mil - SS - 15 (306)
    Pick 16
    Pick 17
    Pick 18
    Kelvin Herrera KC - RP - 19
    Max Kepler Min - OF - 20
    Zack Wheeler NYM - SP - 21

    Pick for the remainder

    I pass on all of those with possible exception of Albies. He will not be up until mid season. So not sure how that plays in your league and implications for keeping into the following year.

      I have two more options on Albies (any of them). The cost advances four rounds each year. If he will play several weeks in Atlanta and full time in 2018, then it's a go.

      The 2019 cost would be for a top 125 pick, so he would have to develop well. That said, he's the sort of player that might. Johnson, no way. He's a mid-200s pick for current use. I realized that I also have Nate Jones (added to OP) as a closer in waiting speculation. With the White Sox fire sale, Robertson might be gone. Since the league uses holds, Jones has better than usual value.
