After 9 seasons of largely mediocre stats, journeyman J.A. Happ put it all together in 2016, going 20-4 with a 3.18 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 163 Ks. A year ago, the fantasy community was split on whether Happ would continue his boffo 2015 2nd half, where he had a 1.85 ERA and 1.03 WHIP under the tutelage of Pirate pitching coach Ray Searage, and those who bet yes won handily.
The question is now, will Happ continue to make forays into the elite tier, or was 2016 a great story but not a long-term expectation?
Happ's last three full seasons are very consistent with similar K%, BB% and HR%, but what changed was his BABIP, dropping to .269.
I think Happ will continue his ways, but his Wins, ERA and WHIP will resemble 2015 more than 2016.
13-9
3.57 ERA
1.23 WHIP
160 Ks
This should make him a solid SP5 in deeper fantasy leagues.
