  • Chapman vs other AL closer keepers?

Now that Chapman is back in the AL, I have the option of keeping him for $22. How do you compare him to my other closer keeper options?

    $5 Edwin Diaz
    $3 Sam Dyson

    or other pitchers

    $8 Rodon
    $5 Danny Duffy

I think I'd rank him above of Rodon and Dyson, but below Duffy and Diaz. Diaz worries me, just the lack of track record and faltering a bit at the end of the season, though.

You'd gotta keep Diaz at $5 and I think I'd keep Dyson at $3 and lock up two closers for $8.

Agreed. Btw if David Robertson is traded, does Nate Jones become the guy for CHW?

In an AL only 5x5 I am keeping Diaz, Duffy and Chapman for $30 and locking up 1st in saves. One will make a good in season trading chip for something I might need as the season progresses.

Is Chapman going to close? Betances is still handy.

            Joking? Pretty confident Chapman closes.

Chapman is the closer. The Yankees prefer Betances going 1+ innings earlier in the game.

As for the post, I think Diaz said he was battling a tired arm at the end of the season. They will probably monitor is usage to make sure he doesn't tire as the season goes on. So as long as you believe in the stuff (which seems pretty great) he should be ok. I'm guessing you can't keep all 5 pitchers? What about a trade. Offer them all up in 2 for 1s or something and see if you get an offer you like.

Yeah, I was watching the M's pretty closely down the stretch, and they rode Diaz much too hard. I was hoping that he'd come in under 50 IP so I could get him as a free keeper, but no luck. He'll be the closer, and he'll be dominent, now that they know what to do with him, and he knows what to expect.

And yeah, no chance that Betances closes...NY didn't overpay for a setup man.

Thanks for the replies. Gregg, I assume you mean Dyson (not Duffy) and you're keeping all 3 closers. Although I plan to keep Duffy too, regardless.

Last year I got burned with so-called closers such as Doolittle, Tolleson, and Storen. So I'm a little leery of the cheap "closer" that may not be now. But you're right, it is hard to pass up on a cheap closer, so I'll probably monitor the Dyson and Diaz situations. Dyson is more of a maybe for me I guess. And there's no way Chapman isn't the closer, I think. I doubt he signed that deal without some type of indication he'll be the one getting the marquee 9th inning job.

As for whether or not to keep a $20 Chapman, it all depends on who he'd bump from my keeper list I guess. So here it is, roughly, now. I can keep 8 (so pick 5 to drop from this list). C contract is last year.

                        Machado $20 C (SS/3B)
                        Seager $23 B (3B)
                        D. Travis $8 B (2B)
                        J. Ramirez $4 B (3B/OF)
                        T. Anderson $7 B (SS)
                        Napoli $7 B (1B) (assuming AL team)
                        Zunino $5 B (C)
                        Dozier $27 B (2B)

                        D. Duffy $5 B
                        E. Diaz $5 B
                        S. Dyson $3 B
                        Chapman $20 B
                        Rodon $8 C

                          Rodon $8 C
I'd probably drop Seager, Ramirez, Napoli, Zunino, and Chapman.

I like the 2 cheap closers and I can't really see any competition for their jobs. Storen and Doolittle were never anything more than shaky in their roles last year, so I don't think that you can really use that as a guide.
