People, let's talk some Shohei Otani.
We shall begin by saying Otani is not arriving in 2017 but is on the radar of every team in major league baseball. And If your roto league allows for prospect speculation, he should be on your radar too. Select him and hope the wait is not too long.
He is RHD's #8 in the most recent edition of prospects for junkies. He is an interesting case for fantasy because the right hander, who just finished his fourth season in Japan, is both a pitcher and a hitter. Born in 1994, this makes Otani JUST 21 years old for most of the 2016 season, and at 6'3 and 190 lbs, there is physical growth to come.
2016 as a pitcher: 20gs, 10wins, 1.86 era, 0.957whip, 140innings, 89hits, 174strikeouts
Not as many wins (15) as 2015 when he pitched 160 innings and had his first season under a 1.000 whip. Also less strike outs too then 2015 (196) but damn, Otani's 2016 pitching line looks almost as good as yuuuuu darvish's japan numbers and we all know how well Yuuu has pitched in Texas.
But Yuuuu didn't hit, Otani can:
2016 as a hitter: 323at bats, 54walks, .322batting average, .416on base average, 22home runs, 7stolen bases
Word in the press is Otani loves hitting as much as pitching and when that time comes for north american baseball, he wants to be signed as a two way player.
Some questions, both roto and real:
Does your roto league allow players to be both a hitter and pitcher ?
Is a mlb team going to let him play both ways ?
If you were a mlb GM, would you let him play both ways ?
Which mlb team do you think is going to sign Otani ?
Finally, what is it going to cost to sign him as a player and what do you think the posting fee shall be (assuming the current system is still in place at that time) ?
