  • How much would you spend on Trevor Story?

For NL 5x5 leagues, how much would you spend on Trevor Story this year? Does he start in the majors or minors? And does it matter?

  • #2
its looking pretty good that hes the starting SS to open the season. reyes is going to be out for a good chunk of time with suspension and he hasnt even been at camp for ST so its gonna take him a while to get game ready when he is eligible. At coors for half his games, hes got 20/20 potential if he gets enough AB, which I think he will.

      So that means what? $15? 25? 35?

Seems like he will cost a lot and carries real downside risk.

NL ss is pretty bad like every other year. My feeling is if he's going over $12 in our draft I'll target Segura for a little more.

Without putting too much thought into it, especially within tiers, this is how I would rank the NL SS for 2016. (I'd probably put SS-eligible Suarez at the top of the second tier.) It's a pretty bleak bunch, and even the good ones have short track records and could easily plunge. All things considered, for 2016, Brandon Crawford is probably the best bet to produce at SS in the NL. Once the babies Seager, Russell, and JCrawford get some experience, they'll push him down.

I'm not sure what a second tier SS goes for in your league, but I'd guess that the fat part of the Story bell curve would be from $12 to $22 with a few exceptions on either end. He's protected in three of my four NL-only leagues, and in the last, I'm full at MI (Turner, Cozart and Peraza for $4 total), but I bet someone will push Fresno Bob into the mid-teens or higher.

          Seager
          BCrawford
          Russell

          Story
          Cabrera
          JCrawford
          Espinosa/Turner
          Villar
          Cozart
          ~
          Peralta
          Mercer
          Ramirez
          Tejada/Garcia
          Aybar
          Hechavarria
          Galvis

I would probably go 12 in my NL only, but that would depend on who was left on the board.

            Probably 10 in my mixed.

People are WAY too high on Story IMO. There was progress last year, but a mediocre average for the minors (roughly .280), and playing half his games in Albacracky don't inspire much confidence in me. I wouldn't go more than 3-5 bucks, which means I'll never get him.

Shortstop in the NL is pretty thin this year, so it's not that we're high, but rather that the bar is low. If you aren't overpaying for Story, you'll end up overpaying for Hechavarria or Aybar. If I'm going to pay more than I should for an unproven commodity, I'd prefer it be for someone with some upside and plays in Coors.

It's all a question of price. In our league, I could see Story going for $18. I would let him go at that price.

Fair points that I can't argue with...

This all begs the question, how much would you spend for Ian Desmond now that he has a job?

Story won't be available in our league auction next week. Because we are drafting 1 week before OD the league co-commishes decided on any player who has rookie status is not available to be bid on. Which means he will be available for the Farm draft. Since I have the 1st round pick I'm tempted but I have other farm players I rate above him. I doubt he will will be available when I select in the 2nd round. We have a 10 round combined farm/reserve draft where we select 6 reserve and 4 farm. You can decide when to draft either in any round. 1st round salary is $10. I have a whole week to consider this. Curious to hear which players you rate above him. Unless it's a dynasty league, I struggle to think of guys I would prefer (who aren't already kept).

Here are players that will be available in the 1st or 2nd round before it gets back to me. Alex Reyes, Arcia, Williams, Swanson, Robles, Margot, Rodgers and Phillips. I was thinking that if I grab Story in the 1st round some of the owners will select players for the reserve roster (not farm) so when it get to the end of the 2nd round and I also start off the 3rd round I can select another decent farm player there. I know most of these owners use HQ reference so I expect most of the top farm selects to be gone by the time it gets back to me. I suppose it is possible that someone like Rodgers might fall to the 2nd round due to not coming up until 3-4 yrs.

High picks aren't so important this year, in my opinion. I think this is a good draft class, but deep and not loaded at the top. There's no one like Kris Bryant. There are, however, tons of talent available in the third round with more upside than I've seen in recent years. This might be a good year to do this strategy.
