This is not a bad trade! Good job Padres.
In the best of times, our days are numbered, anyway. And it would be a crime against Nature for any generation to take the world crisis so solemnly that it put off enjoying those things for which we were presumably designed in the first place, and which the gravest statesmen and the hoarsest politicians hope to make available to all men in the end: I mean the opportunity to do good work, to fall in love, to enjoy friends, to sit under trees, to read, to hit a ball and bounce the baby.

Kimbrel is 2/25M or 3/38 if option is picked up. Great for the Sox now but gave up more than I would have with Kimbrel not being cheap.

3/38 million is actually pretty cheap for a stud closer in this market. And a team like the Red Sox can certainly afford that. What they can't afford anymore is to give away games in their pen like they did last season, it was horrendous. If they sign a free agent starter, they're right back in the mix of things, if not the division favorites, IMO. And they really didn't have to give up their top tier prospects like Moncada, devers, Swihart, etc...they've got great depth in their system and they used some to get a HOF caliber closer.

Better haul for the Padres than it was for the Braves imo as Braves deal banks on a TJ-recovery from Fried

Just meant they are paying market value, not cheap for a closer plus giving up 4 prospects including one probably top 25-30 and another in the top 100 plus 2 other decent prospects. I didn't research all closer salaries but Kimbrel if not the highest, I'd guess is in the top 2. Chapman will exceed that I'm sure. I think this one is a win for Preller imo.

Nice haul for the Padres. I expected the Sox to upgrade the mediocre rotation before the pen.

Sox did this deal without making a big dent at the top of their prospect list. It hits their depth, but they traded from the riskier range of prospects. San Diego amuses me. Last year, went all in to chase a title, and now they're doing the same to chase titles in the minors.

Hey, the Sox could've had Papelbon back AND probably received prospects...and only have had to give up a bag of Doritos or something. :-)

But again, as Jason said, they can afford to pay for the player, both financially and with prospects. Honestly, they barely dented the list of guys that they have in their system...SD got good, not great, prospects.

Have you heard somewhere that the Padres are only restocking? I've not heard anything like that. I've heard he's clearing salary so he can sign need FAs at SS and 1b. Pre Arb they've cut payroll back to 65 Million, but ownership has already committed to ADD to next years payroll.

AS to the deal the Padres dealt Wisler, Maybin and Quentin--they got Melvin and Kimbrel Maybin posted a 1 WAR in 55 PAs to Melvin's 1.6 in 225 and Kimbrel was just turned into 4 minor leagues On in the MLB top 20 and the other in the top 50, 3 in the top 15 of the Sox organization. I get the Melvin hate, but if he get's back to his 3+ WAR ways playing excellent D in CF (I know, big IF)the overall deal was great for SD.

I don't think Melvin has to amount to anything for it to have been a solid deal for the Padres. You take certain risks; sometimes the don't pay out. But to flip Kimbrel for a package of solid prospects makes it very reasonable.

They have a lot of holes to address. Sending away the solid back end of your bullpen is the ultimate test of fungible assets in the pen, but they now have to replace IPK, 2 relievers, and Upton in the OF and I'm sure I'm forgetting some other pieces departing via free agency.
