  • Hosmer and Cashner--ROS

An owner in my league went bananas with some long term deals, and is now offering to give away most of the players he extended in the offseason to make room for new cheaper, higher upside keepers he acquired in recent dump deals and via minor league call ups. Of these, the most promising are Hosmer and Cashner. My league size is 14 teams, extended rosters (30 majors, 20 minors), so fairly deep considering it is just a 14 team league, but neither player is a highly valued asset in a league this size.

Our salary cap is $400, and we keep 15, so crazy inflation, which also leads to crazy extensions, because the reward of locking up a stud cheap is worth the risk of a lame duck contract, in a system with so many keeper spots and so much money. Anyway, that is the set up. Here is my dilemma: I don't want either Hosmer $21 for 3 years or Cashner $17 for 3 years, as keepers. I have better options and I don't want to lock up keeper slots of them.

But, I have two rivals who are in the money with me who just happen to be in desperate need of a 1bman and a SP respectively. I fear they may decide to take on these contracts, and while neither player is a world beater in a 14 team mixed league, with our extended starters/roster, they are helpful players that are clear upgrades for these teams. So, should I swoop in and take on these lame duck contracts to block them from going to my two rivals for free? If so, do you think either player plays well enough the ROS to become a trade asset or keeper worthy? Right now, both players are about at cost, but they are not desirable, because of their guaranteed deals and because they don't represent strong keeper value based on year to date performances.

I'd get Hosmer if at all possible. Showing real growth this year, and his upside is high. At worst, you don't lose much on him too.

I'd pass on Cashner. Heck, he could well hurt one of your competitors if they get him this year, and I don't think he'll come near contract value anytime soon.
I'm just here for the baseball.

What chancellor said. Yes to Hosmer, no to Cashner.

Can you buy yourself out of a contract prematurely?

Yes, but it costs a keeper slot for the year you make the buy out and 100% of the value of year 1 and 50% of the value of the remaining years. It usually isn't worth it unless the player is a total dud.

The rival that needed a 1bman took the plunge on Hosmer. He gave up Baez for him. Baez is due for an extension in the offseason, and I imagine anyone else would just let him go into the auction, but this owner is known for gambling on high upside contracts. He might extend Baez for several years despite the uncertainty of playing time.

You are probably right. I don't need Hosmer, and he may end up stepping up and playing well enough that he is a real asset, but why gamble on that just to block another team from getting marginally better?
