  • Keeper Help

Keepers are due in a month so I'm starting to take a look and dwindle down the choices. I can keep up to 10. We can keep players for a max of 3 years

Mixed League - 6 x 6 (normal categories + OPS for hitters and QS for pitchers)

    POS PLAYER COST Year
    1B Paul Goldschmidt $16 3
    1B Jose Abreu $17 2
    1B Justin Morneau $1 2
    1B Brandon Belt $6 2
    SS Ian Desmond $6 3
    3B Kyle Seager $8 2
    IF Adrian Beltre $24 2
    OF Billy Hamilton $5 2
    OF George Springer $2 1

    SP Yordano Ventura $2 1
    SP Michael Wacha $12 2
    SP James Shields $15 2
    SP Hisashi Iwakuma $14 2
    SP Andrew Cashner $9 2
    SP Dylan Bundy $5 2
    SP Matt Harvey $8 2
    RP Greg Holland $4 3
    RP Kenley Jansen $7 2

I rebuilt last year so I have 18 for 10 spots although I'm not really considering Morneau, Belt or Bundy. I may also keep just one of Seager/Beltre since Seager is younger and cheaper.

I already have an offer on the table of Holland for Adam Jones ($28/2nd year) which I may consider since I have some cheap keepers elsewhere and could use the OF help. Also looking to make 2 for 1 or 3 for 2 deals to maximize my keeper list.

    What say the pen?

Some clear candidates in my mind.

    Locks:
    1B Paul Goldschmidt $16 3
    1B Jose Abreu $17 2
    SS Ian Desmond $6 3

    Likely next picks:
    SP Yordano Ventura $2 1
    SP James Shields $15 2
    SP Dylan Bundy $5 2
    SP Matt Harvey $8 2
    RP Kenley Jansen $7 2
    3B Kyle Seager $8 2

Final keeper likely Billy H, but would look to trade from this group to land one more top keeper:
    RP Greg Holland $4 3
    OF Billy Hamilton $5 2
    OF George Springer $2 1

Mostly agree... # of teams could make a difference. I'm not sold on Shields but a lot depends on where he goes. I'd probably swap Springer and Shields, as well as Holland and Bundy moving Shields/Bundy to below the line. I don't love the Adam Jones deal but if everyone has keepers like you, I'd imagine inflation is crazy, and it's probably a deal you should make.

Yea, I would like to know how many teams as well.

I would add that George Springer for 2 bucks would be in my top tier in any league I play in. Going to be a beast this year and next.

Thanks for the responses so far guys. Shallow league - 10 teams but 35 man rosters so it plays a little bit bigger. But definitely shallower than most leagues. Does that change some thoughts?

Definitely wouldn't keep Bundy in a league that shallow. Less excited about Hamilton too - you can probably manage without a 1-dimensional guy.

SP Dylan Bundy $5 2 He doesn't have a rotation spot yet but could end up in the rotation. I do not see him as a better keeper for only a year and a half (at most) stats.

Adding QS devalues closers as well.

I've been offered my Billy Hamilton ($5/2nd year) for Alex Cobb ($5/last year) and Starlin Castro ($2/2nd year).

As of right now I wasn't planning on keeping Hamilton as he is really 1-dimensional and it's a shallow enough league that I can find other speed. However, Is Cobb/Castro worth it - would I really be keeping either of these guys over my other guys? The other owner also has Rendon ($1/2nd year) who would be an upgrade over some of my keepers as well as Rizzo ($13/2nd year).

Also - is Shields worth consideration again now that he's landed in a favorable spot?

Agreed. And I said Shields even before he signed so I'd definitely be keeping him now.
