  • Why not an error? Mil vs. Cinci 3/31

Watching the Milwaukee game vs. Cinci where Axford blew the save, I am curious why McGehee’s play in the 9th wasn’t an error and saving Axford from that horrible 54 ERA…
The play in question is: man on first and second, ground ball hit to McGehee. He fields it, goes to tag the runner going from 2nd to third but misses the tag and then fails to get the runner at first due to the delay in trying to tag the runner. Axford strikes out the next batter, then Gomes hits a sac fly to score a runner but that would have been the 3rd out of the inning. Hernandez then comes up and hits the slam.

So just curious, why no error charged to McGehee on a routine ground ball that should have resulted in the first out?

    TIA

I think you can not assume an out. I assume it was considered a fielders choice.

I wonder if he dropped the ball while tagging it would be considered an error?
