So is Ryan Schimpf actually good? He hit .103 in June after his callup but so far in July he's hitting .300 with 8 HR.

In the best of times, our days are numbered, anyway. And it would be a crime against Nature for any generation to take the world crisis so solemnly that it put off enjoying those things for which we were presumably designed in the first place, and which the gravest statesmen and the hoarsest politicians hope to make available to all men in the end: I mean the opportunity to do good work, to fall in love, to enjoy friends, to sit under trees, to read, to hit a ball and bounce the baby.

The week he came up, I grabbed him for $1 FAAB in all of my leagues. I figure he's a strong hitter in his prime years on a team with opportunity to give him time to show his stuff. San Diego has, for the next few years (barring trades, of course), Spangenberg, Pirela, Amarista and Weeks as 2B competition, so the field is incredibly wide open for a guy like this to make a mark until Urias or Guerra make their way out of A-ball.
I think if things bounce his way, I could picture a career like Casey McGehee, maybe, with a couple of years of real value and then a precipitous decline. That is the high end of my estimation. I feel he's a fine risk if you can get him cheap, especially now that he's playing well. Let's be frank, if he keeps this up, he's a starting 2B next year and that's something if you can get it cheap.
Buy, with moderation.

Potential steals alert in SD...
ROTOWORLD: Padres outfield prospect Manuel Margot was pulled from a game at Triple-A El Paso in the fourth inning Saturday. Margot was spotted in the dugout and he isn't believed to be injured. The speculation is that he could be headed to the Padres to replace Melvin Upton, who appears likely to be traded at any moment. Margot is a top-50 prospect who's batting .306/.356/.434 with four homers and 24 steals for El Paso. He's worth a speculative add in mixed leagues.12-team mixed keeper. 6x6 (OBP, QS the extra categories).

he's lowered his ERA every month and this month has a 3.45 ERA in 4 starts. His last start vs the Nats was solid.
Again, if you have roster room, take a flier on him. You might just be pleasantly surprised come end of the season.67.5

Alert?!!?
SS Jose Rondon is apparently being added to the ML roster of the Padres. I can't imagine why except a short term audition while Solarte is out on leave. If I whisper my wicked marching orders into the ether with no regard to where or how they may bear fruit, I am blameless should a broken spirit carry those orders out upon the innocent, for it was not my hand that took the action merely my lips which let slip their darkest wish. ~Daniel Devereaux 2011
