pretty respectable. What does this mean for Gattis? staying behind the plate? or a goner?
It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.

I think it may mean Justin Upton is a goner.

In a vacuum I don't hate it. 4/44 for a guy with a solid stick, though declining power. His glove is fading too, though I think the metrics are a little harsh on him. Can he put up 6-7 wins over 4 years? Probably.

But if the Braves are trying to build for 2017 I have no idea how this helps them. Especially since it hurts their leverage in trading Gattis or Upton.

Hey Atlanta, I know it can be hard to re-sign guys, but do you know who would be a nice draw to start off your new stadium in 2 years? Jason Heyward and Justin Upton.

They can re-sign them after next season if they want. If they don't feel they can compete this year why not get the prospects? So far they have lost Heyward for a year, gotten a good return, and can sign him next year. There seems to be a strong market for Upton as well. Why not trade him now and maybe re-sign him later?

Because most of the time FA's do not go back to their old teams.

Not sure who you're replying to, but if it's Gregg, I think he's spot on. When was the last time a pending free agent was traded away and then re-signed with the old team? I'm hard-pressed to remember even one instance in the last 10 years.

Braves were aware of the injury, and prior to signing Markakis to a four-year, $44 million deal, members of the front office viewed a report from an independent specialist who evaluated him in the offseason. If Markakis opts for surgery, he will need approximately 12 weeks of recovery and should be on track to be ready come opening day.
Well OK then. I don't like this deal anymore.

I think that it pretty much says that they're rebuilding for the 2016 season...hoping that the neck surgery restores some of the lost power, and makes the last 3 years of the deal better.

Do you still feel it makes no sense after the Jason Hammel signing?

Major league teams and players are acting different than they used to perhaps because of all the changes to major league rules dealing with the draft and free agency.

It certainly proves that it is possible. Lester might do the same.

I don't think the Braves will resign Heyward either. Not because they won't want to but because somebody will outbid them. I don't think that the chances of resigning him have been greatly changed by the trade. I think they determined that they couldn't re-sign him and then acted as they thought was in their best interest.

Agreed. Hammel's situation is nowhere near normal for a traded player. He signed with the Cubs for the 2014 season knowing that he was going to likely be flipped at the deadline if he was pitching well. The fan base and media sensed it coming from day one. Therefore, there likely were no hard feelings on either side when the trade happened. I really doubt if Heyward has the same mindset as Hammel at this point.
