  • AL ROY--Who's Next?

Since Abreu put up MVP type numbers as a rookie, there has been little discussion about the RoY in the AL.Who would you pick of the next five?

    Code:
Player	I	TEAM	POS	G	AB	R	H	HR	RBI	BB	SO	SB	CS	AVG	OBP	SLG	OPS
    Bogaerts BOS	SS	144	538	60	129	12	46	39	138	2	3	0.240	0.297	0.362	0.660
    Castellanos DET	3B	148	533	50	138	11	66	36	140	2	2	0.259	0.306	0.394	0.700
    Holt B	BOS	3B	106	449	68	126	4	29	33	98	12	2	0.281	0.331	0.381	0.711
    Santana D	MIN	SS	101	405	70	129	7	40	19	98	20	4	0.319	0.353	0.472	0.824
    Odor R	TEX	2B	114	386	39	100	9	48	17	71	4	7	0.259	0.297	0.402	0.698
Note these are all "glove" positions. I would lean to Santana.

Do you mean by "who's next" as to who would finish second? If so, Masahiro Tanaka.

No, Danny Santana should be the choice...played both SS and CF and played both well. Hit over .300, stole 20 bags as well. Also had a little pop in his bat...

But I agree with Revo...Tanaka is the obvious choice despite the missing time.

Was he considered a rookie? He had 47 IP, but did he have the service time? If he is a rookie, yeah, he should be up there.

He was a rookie. He had 47.1 innings and 27 days on the active roster during the period of 25-player limit coming into the 2014 season. He also spent most of September 2012 and September 2013 in the majors, but that service time doesn't count against the rookie limit.

            Determining rookie status:
A player shall be considered a rookie unless, during a previous season or seasons, he has (a) exceeded 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues; or (b) accumulated more than 45 days on the active roster of a Major League club or clubs during the period of 25-player limit (excluding time in the military service and time on the disabled list).

How about waiver pickup of the year? Nice job on that one Mike. I'm anxiously awaiting the Stros next waiver claim. No pressure lol. Glad i scooped him up in my league.

Ventura and Odorizzi have to be given consideration for votes as well as McHugh.

                    I'd go:
                    1- Abreu
                    2- Tanaka
                    3- Ventura
                    4- McHugh
                    5- Santana/Odorizzi

I would think Betances merits some consideration, too.

I'm curious why you'd rank Tanaka (or Ventura, for that matter) ahead of McHugh. Pretty much the only thing that Tanaka did better was the W-L record, which can mostly be attributed to the run support that he got and McHugh didn't.

I think my ballot would be
                        1. Abreu
                        2. McHugh
                        3. Betances

Um, oh yeah. He was amazing. I think he'll finish 4th or 5th. Good class of rooks this year in the AL (even if Abreu and Tanaka weren't exactly rookies).

                            5. Tanaka
Tanaka was arguably the best pitcher in the AL over the time he was healthy, and Ventura contributed mightily to a team that made the playoffs. I think both have a big edge over McHugh, who (unfortunately) was pitching with no real meaning on the line at any time this season. I realize the ROTY award usually doesn't take that into account, but when it does, it should matter to those who did.

Abreu, Betances & Shoemaker named the three finalists. I guess we all forgot about Shoemaker, who went 16-4 with a 3.07 ERA and 1.04 WHIP.
