Seeing those numbers, I looked up his contract. Mauer gets $23 million a season through 2018. In other words, Minny is on the hook for roughly another $100 million dollars.

How many 100 million dollar ++ long term contracts have actually worked out for the team ?

The problem is that he's supposedly healthy...and that's what's concerning. Sad because he gets so much heat from the locals, because of the contract and unrealistic expectations...and he's probably the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet. I think these players actually do themselves a disservice by signing these long-term contracts that are backbreaking to the franchise. You've already made a ton of money before the big contract so why put yourself through the scrutiny of a gigantic deal?
