I was reading thru a twitter thread and someone mentioned Dolly Parton has an outstanding reading program. did not know that.

She has done a lot of charity work, I believe.

And Melinda Gates has done a lot for the status of women around the globe, through the Gates Foundation.

Simone and Serena are obviously well-known for their athletic accomplishments, but they have broken a lot of race boundaries. And Simone Biles was one of the leaders in exposing the abuse culture in USA Gymnastics.

This thread is actually kind of encouraging to be reminded that there are a lot of admirable Americans. Maybe aspiring to "greatest" was never a healthy way to look at it, but I do think it can be helpful to have role models and heroes.

Most of the great civil rights leaders have passed. Most recently John Lewis. Are any of them still living?

Obama was the first person that i thought of. But, then i remembered that half of the country hates him.

Melinda Gates is an interesting candidate. How much of the Gates foundation is based upon her desires vs Bill, who has some questionable aspects to his candidacy. I had a brief interaction with both of them as our dogs were sniffing butts after a kids soccer game, but I won't let that cloud my judgement either way.

EDIT: interesting to think about, but maybe more practical to applaud people for their positive accomplishments and hold them accountable for when they fall short.

A Carnegie Mellon University professor is under fire for a social media post.

Professor Uju Anya posted the following tweet, which has since been removed by Twitter:

“I heard the chief monarch of a thieving raping genocidal empire is finally dying. May her pain be excruciating.”

She then followed up with another tweet:

If anyone expects me to express anything but disdain for the monarch who supervised a government that sponsored the genocide that massacred and displaced half my family and the consequences of which those alive today are still trying to overcome, you can keep wishing upon a star.
