  • Ashleigh Barty retires from tennis

Women's tennis star, Ashleigh Barty announced her retirement yesterday. This was a shock to the tennis world as she was the #1 ranked women's player in the world at the time, had won the most recent Grand Slam event, the Australian Open, is only 25 y/o and was experiencing no health issues. She gave as her reason that she doesnt have the physical and emotional drive anymore to compete at the highest level. She had been the #1 player for over 2 years straight and she had not played since winning the Aussie Open. She won 3 grand slam events in her career. I couldnt think of another instance where a player in any individual sport retired at the top of the world but the article I read said that Justine Henin also retired as the women's #1 tennis player. With Barty's retirement, Poland's Iga Swiatek becomes the new #1 ranked player, the first Polish player to achieve a #1 ranking.
