  • So what kind of dog (pets) ya got. Include names.

I'm sitting in my backyard and a beautiful Chicago summer night, after a rough day at the office. I'm decompressing by watching my nine-month old Shepard Black Lab mix try to bury a rawhide bone. Her name is Lina. She keeps looking at me when she's about to hide it and whenever we make eye contact she moves somewhere else in the yard as if I'm her competition. She's a rescue pup with a Tetralogy of Fallot heart condition. She won't live terribly long, maybe 3 to 5 years, but for a dog with a broken heart, she has sure fixed mine. We lost our 8 yr old Golden Retreiver last November suddenly to an undiagnosed heart condition. She has helped us get over that loss and it just felt right to give her a chance at a happy life. And, while certainly not wealthy, we have the financial means to keep her comfortable. Such a sweet heart. Thank God for pets, they truly can change your mood!

If no one responds, that's OK. Just wanted to say this somewhere.

    lovely story, Bernie!

we had sibling cats, Murphy and Tabitha, from 1997 to 2014. both were striking pets, but Murph was the most charismatic animal I've ever seen. Tab was - a diva. she never did warm up to Mrs Judge, which was amusing (to me). you would think she had beaten this cat or something, from the facial expressions. meanwhile, she kneaded me 3-4 times a day and purred up a storm. pure jealousy, which seems weird to me - a female cat competing for affection with a female human. I tried to please both, for sure.

the cats were best of friends, and often snuggled together while taking naps. ok, in the earlier years even a fixed Murph occasionally tried to take impractical liberties with his sis, but well they are animals.

they passed away only 2 months apart. Murph was diabetic his last 3 years, which was no picnic given the twice a day insulin shots...

So sorry for the loss of your golden; my brother had 2 (one is still with him). Dogs have a way of breaking our hearts. It's nice to know that Lina has a loving home for however long she is with you.

BTW, nice thread to start. I'm sure you'll get replies and stories.

We have a 3 y/o Pom (give or take a few months) named Mia. After we lost all 3 of our dogs in a 14 month span, our house was quiet - too quiet. We put our Yorkie Liz down in Oct 2015 and I spent countless hours trying to find a dog/puppy for us. I finally saw a Facebook post showcasing a few dogs from a rescue in Ohio. Not having seen this particular rescue before, I checked out it's webpage and there was her picture. We both knew this dog was to be our new pet. I completed the app that night (Tuesday), talked with them on Wednesday after they contacted my vet, and we made the 2 1/2 hour trip to pick her up on Friday Dec 11.

The rescue got her and her sister from a breeder; neither could get pregnant and they became expendable. Neither had names, so the rescue named them Ava and Bea (A & B). Bea had been adopted prior to us seeing Ava's (Mia's) picture, or we probably would have adopted both. She was very shy and backward due to no socialization. Just taking her for a walk was a big deal; she was always so afraid of the world. Gradually this little dog developed a confidence and 'took the point' when we walk. She's become a social butterfly; she has to greet everyone on our walks. Plus, this dog is intelligent. When she encounters something new, she sits and observes until the micro computer chip in her head processes it and then we continue on. She also loves to play and run through the house (glad she isn't a great dane).

Mia has become the perfect dog for us and I hope she knows how much joy she has brought to my wife and me.

Damnit. I'm looking for the heart emoji from Facebook!!! Pets have a way of filling the empty spaces in hearts. Not everyone is a pet person and I get that, though I'm suspicious of those who don't like pets! Not really. Thanks for sharing JJ and MagS. Thanks for making my bad day even better with these good feel stories.

          I have no pets.

My wife, however, has a black Morkie named Leela. She is worthless. She likes one small-size Milk-Bone brand treat before I leave for work in the morning. She insists that dinner be served precisely at 6:30 p.m., which is shortly before my wife gets home from work.

Leela prefers to retire no later than 11:00 p.m., and barks sharply to remind me. She requires that I offer her, with considerable formality, two (2) mini-size Milk-Bone brand treats, followed by one small-size Milk-Bone brand treat, all while telling her she is a "good girl". She then allows herself to be petted briefly before snuggling into a sham pillow at the foot of the bed. She arises some time between 4:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m., whereupon I escort her to the door and she patrols the back yard for between 2 and 20 minutes.

My wife enjoys having a dog, but I am content to remain pet-free.

Great thread and stories!! I could talk for hours about my best buddies. I am so freaking emotionally attached to my pets it might not be healthy!!

My family has 2 dogs and 2 cats and a guinea pig. And yes they all get along fine!

              The dogs:
Fonzee 20170324_181447.jpg - Da Fonz is a 5 year old Collie, We got him from a rescue in Ohio. He is my buddy. Follows me everywhere and just loves the crap out of me. He's a big ol goof who is friendly with everyone.

Mollee 20170505_154857.jpg - 3 and 1/2 year old long hair miniature Daschund. She is a trip! Weiner dogs are so damn cool. She loves her belly rubbed and pretty much demands attention.

              The cats:
Buffy 20161224_153956.jpg - 8 year old Buffles is my best buddy. My wife says Buffy is in love with me. She greets me at the door...follows me around the house (with Fonzee)..lays next to me at all times...wakes me in the morning and lays next to me in bed at night.

Munchkin 20160629_154700.jpg - Munchie is a little over a year. We got her from the rescue society. Her litter was abandoned and she had a bad infection in one eye that we were not sure would allow her to see in that eye. It cleared up, but she looks cross-eyed! She is a sweetheart. and She loves the water. Anytime anyone goes into the bathroom she runs in and jumps into the sink.

Guinea pig is brown and named Chestnut. No pics. Cute as hell and loves to make loud squeaking noises.

I have a cavalier named Finn. I love him, but sadly my wife does not. He follows another cavalier we lost to sudden heart failure, and while Finn is great in his own way, my wife can't help but compare him to our first, Blake. Blake was deaf, but still followed sight commands wonderfully. Finn, not so much, and has accidents in the house sometimes. He had a nervous stomach, and vomits on occasion too. Still love the little guy, but do wish my wife was more engaged with him. He was her idea. I wasn't quite ready for a new pup after losing Blake so suddenly. Ironically, I'm Happy she forced it and she regrets it.

Us having our first child soon after getting Finn may have something to do with it too. She doesn't like them interacting, as she is a bit of a germaphobe, and Finn loves to lick. We live I'm upstate NY where ticks and Lyme disease are very common too. If she only knew how I let them play when she isn't looking, always checking for ticks first, of course, she would kill me.

On the tick front, we use front line, but the ticks still get on him. Tried Advantix, but Finn had a horrible reaction to it. Didn't move for days. There are some real horror stories on advantix out there that I read after the fact.
