    Over the past month or so, highlighted by the Starbucks arrest, there have been a string of reported incidents of white people calling the police/authorities on black people engaged in benign everyday behaviors. While there has been discussion whether a segment of the white population (including plenty who would probably identify as Democrats or even liberals, like the "feminist" graduate student at Yale who reported a black student who was napping in a dormitory common room) is increasingly "emboldened" to question/confront/report blacks, my conversations with black friends and colleagues suggest this is nothing new. So maybe it's just a coincidence that there has been a string of incidents, or maybe the MSM and social media are just more focused on it now and its current prominence is just a matter of curating the news. Regardless, having the police/authorities called on you when you're engaging in benign everyday behavior appears to be at least a semi-common lived experience for many black people, and the psychological impact of that is further enhanced by the black community's understandable fear (whether based on lived experience or media reporting) that too many police officers are too quick or too willing to shoot or otherwise visit violence upon blacks when responding to incidents.

    There's been lots of discussion and debate about whether and to what extent police officers and police departments are being held accountable and should be held accountable for disparate harm visited upon blacks.

    To what extent can/should private individuals be held accountable for visiting harm upon blacks, even if the harm is limited to having to spend 20-30 minutes explaining/defending your right to be where you are, doing what you're doing? As a pattern over time, that has to be psychologically and spiritually draining. Potential remedies could include serial reporters of #__ingwhileblack being charged and prosecuted under public nuisance laws, or could include civil rights organizations helping negatively impacted blacks to bring civil lawsuits under common law or statutory tort laws such as "malicious prosecution", "malicious use of process", "defamation", or "infliction of emotional distress". All of those potential remedies can themselves be subject to abuse, of course, but I think they're worthy of thought. Then there's what I'll call the "Fresno Bob approach" of extra-legal punitive action, which includes public shaming or shunning of white people who call the police/authorities and otherwise confront/berate/humiliate black people engaged in benign behavior.

    Coming from an analytical perspective I really want to know how often a similar scenario occurs that doesn't involve race, before we definitely label it. I'm confident that there are plenty of racists out there so there is no doubt that this could be happening and is happening, but before we label every single scenario, I like to see the objective analysis rather than just the emotion.

    Has there been analysis on how many times starbucks has kicked out individuals of other races?

    Have we looked at how many times the police have been called regarding a potential burglary due to suspicious white kids in an AirBNB?

    Separately we need to be careful associating this with the police. The police are responding to a report, and in my opinion we want them to continue responding to these reports. Seems dangerous to add in a "wait, prove you aren't a racist before I respond" step in emergency response protocols.

    That said, if there are repeat offenders that are calling in false information, I completely agree with the nuisance laws approach.

      i think social media certainly helps fuel the paranoia too. You didn't hear about the car 2 blocks over that got broken into before, but now it seems like there's a car broken into every other day! Things are getting much much worse, and much more dangerous out there. Everyone needs to be more vigilant.

      From what I can tell the Nextdoor app seems to be built for 1) people selling their junk, 2) people who lost/found a pet 3) NIMBY racists who think everyone is out to get them. People are reported for sleeping in their cars at parks (most likely pedophiles), people jogging too slowly to actually be getting exercise (most likely casing houses), and anyone knocking on someone's door (most likely looking to break in). Many of these come with descriptions (he looked half-Mexican! (the top or bottom I wonder...)) All these people call the cops at the slightest provocation and are encouraged by 90% of the rest of the board for being more aware than the other 10% snowflakes who are on the strings.
      I'm not expecting to grow flowers in the desert...

        I don't know what data exists breaking down calling-the-police-to-report-benign-behavior incidents by race. Surveying may be the best we can do.





        I think if we even on an individual level asked our white friends, relatives and colleagues and our black friends, relatives and colleagues to describe instances where someone threatened to call and/or did call the police on them, the disparities in lived experiences would come through pretty loud and clear.





        Ultimately, as white people, I think we need to be as open as possible to listening to and really hearing black people's lived experience.

          In a country founded on genocide and slavery, oops I mean liberty and equality, it is shocking that African Americans and Native Americans are still targeted.

          I do completely agree though that these morons responsible for calling the cops need to be punished. Some civil suits are hopefully being filed as we type.

                It appears that bbq'ing is illegal in the park in certain areas. Not sure if they were indeed barbecueing in that part where it is banned.

                  Oh sure, but this woman was taking it to another level, harassing them and being verbally abusive. You want to call the cops, go sit in your car, let them know, and be on your way.

                              Had to make sure this wasn't one of the pre-mature, erroneous doxxings I've seen (ever since the one where Spike Lee posted the wrong Zimmerman address and caused a whole lot of needless pain for those folks, I'm wary of such quick crowd-sourced sleuthing). This looks like they got the right guy, and boy, what an asshole he is. He is also in another video screaming "fake jews" at Jewish supporters of Palestine. What an entitled prick. He deserves everything coming to him, although, I have to admit, as hateful attacks go, a Trumpster coming up with "Fake Jews" as a play on "Fake News" is more clever than most.
