  • 'Desert Island Disc' Classic Rock Draft Thread

    Format:
    - 25 rounds
    - 4 songs from the each of the following decades: 1950/1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s. 5 widlcard picks from any decade.
    - Once you choose a band/singer, they're no longer available to you to choose from.
    - you may take a band's song and then a song by a former member as a solo artist, or in another band (i.e. Beatles/McCartney solo/Wings)
    - Song must have been released either as a single or from an album in that decade.
    - in the event an album or song was released in different decades in Europe and in the US, you may use either.
    - "classic rock" is open to interpretation, but probably should not include dance, disco, house, most rap (i.e. Beastie Boys/Public Enemy probably fine, Vanilla Ice probably not). Reggae, R&B, power pop all acceptable.
    - 4 hours during the workweek, 6 hours on evenings & weekends. No clock on from 9pm - 9am.

          Okay. Start off with a simple, killer riff. Add in catchy lyrics, complete with themes of alienation and sexual frustration. Give it a beat. It's rock and roll.

                Had to go with my favorite Zep; this one never gets old, because that riff in the chorus keeps coming back, awesome and majestic every time. And the best drum track in history.

                  There are plenty of songs I love from the '60 and '70s. I'll have no problem getting enough stuff that I want from those years.

                  I think my '80s and '00s tastes are different enough from most of you that I'll be able to get most of my favorites from those years.

                  The '90s are a different story. I suspect I'll be competing for a lot of the same songs/bands with many of you. Therefore:

                  1.05 Smells Like Teen Spirit, Nirvana (Nevermind, 1991)



                  This song changed my life, as it did for many people around my age (40). In my middle school, high school, and early college years, unless you listened to college radio, about all the radio was playing was synth pop, hair metal, and what is now called classic rock. The sensation caused by this song opened up the floodgates to a whole bunch of excellent heavy music that still informs my tastes today.

                    one of my favorite songs of all time, as well as a key part of one of my favorite movies of all time. One of the greatest riffs, as well as instrumentals. What more can you ask for?

                      This draft is a lot harder than I would've imagined just because my favorite songs probably won't get drafted so there's a certain amount of strategy involved. Anyway, I'll follow in Erik's footsteps and go with a 90's classic from arguably the best band of the last 20 years:

                      1.07 - "Paranoid Android" - Radiohead (OK Computer, 1997)

                      For me it's got everything I want in my Desert Island disc - epic, non-repetitive, lots of mood changes, and most of all...excellence.

                        I figure no one else will be drafting a Rush song so I'm safe to go with another song .

                        Talk about a game changer. To me Master of Puppets is the "Like a Rolling Stone " of the 80's. It ushered in a new kind of music to the masses. Their first two albums laid the groundwork for this masterpiece. An eight plus minute head banging, blood pumping workout with one of the greatest guitar solos on record.. FIX ME!!
