  • Lance Berkman Retires

    From Rotoworld--

"Lance Berkman has retired from baseball.

Berkman confirmed that news Wednesday to Richard Justice of MLB.com. The 37-year-old former first-round pick of the Astros spent 15 seasons at the major league level, batting .293/.406/.537 while tallying 366 career home runs in 1,879 career games. After spending 12 years in Houston, he went on to play for the Yankees, Cardinals and Rangers."

During his Astro days, he was one of the great unsung players in the majors. Had he put up his usual steady numbers while playing in Boston, New York, Chicago, or LA, he would have been considered close to being a superstar, but alas, he didn't play for a major market team until his fading days. Some people here in Cincinnati have speculated on what his numbers might have been had he played all his home games here, where he feasted on Reds pitching, but I always point out that had he played for the Reds, he wouldn't have been hitting off all those "wonderful" Reds pitchers of the 15 years before the last four years or so, when they got a lot better.
