This has to be a sign that Shohei's season will be over soon, probably this week.

Mike Clevinger of the ChiSox also was placed on waivers. I'd like to see my O's snap up a couple of these guys. They could use someone like Giolito or Clevinger in the rotation and I think Moore would be a good add to the pen.

Clevinger has a $4m buyout in his contract for next season, making a waiver claim on him unlikely.

That buyout only applies if the team choses not to pick up the $12m option right? $12m seems reasonable at this point for him.

It's a mutual option, so it's likely Clevinger would not accept his side of it, leaving the team on the hook for the $4m.

The buyout only applies if the team chooses not to pick up the option right? They are buying out the contract. That doesn't apply if the player chooses not to pick up the option.

              Unless I'm missing something?

Edit to add: no I'm not missing anything - the buyout only comes into play if the team declines the offer.

Having already recently examined overall trends in the inclusion of options in contracts, we’ll now take a look at the …

It was a mutual buyout. Both Clevinger and the claiming team needed to accept the 2024 contract, and the likelihood was Clevinger was not going to. That's why he went unclaimed, as it was likely going to cost a team $5m-$6m for one month's service.

I dont believe I fully understand waivers. Can a team claim as many as they want when it's "their turn," or is it like fantasy waivers, one player at a time? because I cant imagine the other contenders all passed on all these players.

I've been reading lots of articles on this since the news came out that the Angel's were going scorched earth and none of them agreed on this topic. Apparently there's a part of the language that says you go to the back of the line after a claim but that's not how we've seen it play out here (or in other situations in the past).

I guess the de-facto answer is, you stay at your current place in line even if you win a claim

That's a bummer, the Cubs definitely could've used him.

Maybe I'm missing something but I'll ask a seemingly obvious question that noone has asked yet: Why did Cleveland, a low-payroll team (24th) that is going no place this season, acquire 3 of these players? Yeah, the contracts of all 3 will expire at the end of the season but still this is a month of fairly high salaries that they are taking on. What is the benefit to Cleveland that would explain the sense in this?

Edit: I see that they're only 5 G behind the Twins, so I guess they're making a last ditch effort of catching them. I thought they were a lot farther back.

                              Correct.

You submit all of your claims blind ahead of the deadline. Then each claim is awarded to the first eligible team in the order who claimed that player.

So if Cleveland had chosen to put in a claim on all the players on the waiver bulletin for that day, they would have been awarded all of them, unless someone ahead of them in the order (e.g., Padres) had put in a claim on one of them.
