Bill James noted that some LHP needed to lose a bit off their heat before they hit their stride as SP. Then they go on forever. Whitey Ford was one of the classic examples. The theory goes that they can survive a higher WHIP by preventing SB and getting more GBDP. Team support, both offensive and defensive, is more important than usual. The list of LHP with their best years after 30 is lengthy.

This makes me wonder if we should re-evaluate a couple of long term fringe pitchers--Wade Miley and Derek Holland. Both are having strong starts for new teams, though Holland left a smoking crater in his last start. Of the two, I much prefer Miley's chances. The Orioles have a solid defense and a good offense. The White Sox--no.
