Today is the 74th anniversary of the U.S. dropping the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. This bombing and the subsequent bombing of Nagasaki, Japan 3 days later killed over 100,000 people.

The lyrics of OMD's 1980 anti-war song "Enola Gay" still resonate today.

Enola Gay, you should have stayed at home yesterday
Aha words can't describe the feeling and the way you lied

These games you play, they're gonna end in more than tears someday
Aha Enola Gay, it shouldn't ever have to end this way

It's 8:15, and that's the time that it's always been
We got your message on the radio, conditions normal and you're coming home

Enola Gay, is mother proud of little boy today
Aha this kiss you give, it's never ever gonna fade away

Enola Gay, it shouldn't ever have to end this way
Aha Enola Gay, it shouldn't fade in our dreams away

It's 8:15, and that's the time that it's always been
We got your message on the radio, conditions normal and you're coming home

Enola Gay, is mother proud of little boy today
Aha this kiss you give, it's never ever gonna fade away
The "Enola Gay" is the Boeing B-29 Superfortress bomber used in the Hiroshima bombing. It was named after Enola Gay Tibbets, the mother of the pilot, Colonel Paul Tibbets.

"Little Boy" was the codename for the type of atomic bomb dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima at 8:15 am on August 6, 1945.

The "Enola Gay" is currently displayed at the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia

BTW, if you haven't been to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, you don't know what you're missing. One of the best museums I have ever been to.

my father was a bombardier (technically a "togglier") in a B-17 - flew 35 missions over Germany late in WW II.

he told me he felt bad for guys who flew in B-29s because that plane didn't have the appeal that B-17 "Flying Fortresses" did to the general public.
