  • RHD's Latest Top 150 Roto Prospects (Mid-Season Edition)

Here's the latest list. I wanted to get it posted before BA and John Sickels did their mid-season lists, but, oh well. I didn’t change too much after looking at their lists and comments, mainly moved some people up and down. The only player I added based on what they had to say was Greg Polanco. I considered Jeimer Candelario also, but he basically was the last cut.

Same spiel as usual: I generally follow BA's prospect eligibility requirements, which are <=130 MLB AB or <=50 MLB IP. Unlike BA tho, amateurs, unsigned draftees and foreign players are eligible. Also, while BA has a different IP limit for relievers (30 IP?), relievers are eligible as long as they dont have >50 IP. As usual, this is for roto, not 'real' baseball, so pitchers are downgraded some, catchers downgraded somewhat (unless they're elite prospects and their bat will play at any position), actual closers upgraded a lot, SB guys who project to get playing time get upgraded some, and guys who either currently are or project to soon be regulars can get upgraded quite a bit. Position listed is their current primary one to the best of my knowledge (correct me if I'm wrong), not the one they're likely to end up at.

I have a couple mid-season drafts coming up, so this list will come in handy personally. I hope it's in time for many of your mid-season drafts also, and I hope it helps.

Wow Billy Hamilton #1 certainly a category filler.

Thanks for the update. I was curious to see where some of these guys would move after all most of the big names graduated.

Does Hamilton still rank #1 for you if he's moved to OF?

Once again thanks for the marvelous work that you do.

Yes, Hamilton would be even more firmly entrenched as #1 if he moves to the OF, which many expect. That's because that move would likely accelerate his ETA in MLB. He's not only stealing everything that's not nailed down, but he's improved his plate discipline and is hitting better also, albeit in a hitters' league and park. If he doesnt break a leg, he'll shatter the MiLB record for SBs. It will be interesting to see how he handles the jump to AA whenever that happens.

The Reds announced that his move to AA will happen after the Futures Game. He's played his last game at A+.

No Josh Rutledge? Granted, he has a poor walk rate and is maybe 6 months older than you'd want, but he continues to show plus contact, power and speed, and is in a great situation (Colorado 2B/SS).

Rutledge definitely is on my radar (currently #205). However, his scouting reports are rather lukewarm; BA had him as the #10 prospect in the Rockies system and the #21 prospect in the Cal League. Yeah, his walk rate is very low; he looks like a "Josh Vitters"-type hitter, some power, not a ton of K's but very few BBs. Prospect mavens wonder how that type of approach will play at higher levels. I would call him a mid-range prospect. He'll have to do better in order to make my list.

You're referring to Hamilton. Obviously, he wouldnt be #1 on a "real" list. But for roto, he could almost win you a category by himself. It's a matter of personal preference, but the list is a ranking of who I would take first in a roto draft, and for me I think it would be Hamilton. He's not a sure thing but no prospect ever is and he is a legitimate "real" top prospect and projects to be a MLB regular. And speed doesnt go into a slump. I drool at the prospect of having a 100+ SB guy at the MLB level and I think he could do that. Would also score a ton of runs and it's looking like he wont hurt you in BA either.

I agree. I'd like to see how he steals against catchers that know what they are doing and pitchers that know how to hold a runner on. I think he can be very valuable but I'd guess right now he projects as a Bonifacio type. Still very valuable but not Harper or Trout valuable
I'm unconsoled I'm lonely, I am so much better than I used to be.

If he can steal ("even") 70+ bases, score a good number of runs and hit for a decent BA, he probably IS more valuable than Harper and Trout, in terms of roto dollars earned.

My pickup of Adrelton Simmons certainly fits your list. How much of his increase is his being in the Show, and how much for long term value.

Also, any comments on Bogaerts and Hak JuLee?

I'm going to wait til he makes his AA debut before I start thinking he could ever do half that.

The chasm between what a contender could get for the dream of Hamilton and what he is more likely to become is as great as I've ever seen, in prospects. There have to be owners out there who know they can win a pennant with the bounty they get for Hamilton right now - but who will chase the rainbow a bit longer.

Thanx, popeye. Others may not necessarily agree that Hamilton is more valuable but that's the idea. However, if Trout and Harper still were eligible, I would still have them above Hamilton. Hammy is just ranked higher than all remaining eligible players rt now.
