He's got an opt out after 2 years, which is pretty smart. He'll only be 30 (or 31) at that point and can sign another long term deal with a more stable labor situation.

As a Tiger fan have mix feelings on the signing but he'll play in a pitcher park and more favorable matchups. I usually have not like Avila signings. Still need a SS.

The last time the Angels signed a SP to a multi year deal was Joe Blanton, and he went 2-13 with a 6.04 era in his first and only season. They have bad pitching because the front office makes bad pitching choices. The Syndergaard deal is another one.

Yeah, its just a lotta money for his track record. I like 1 year 'prove it' deals, since the 2 the Jays signed last winter worked out so incredibly well (Semien 1 yr, $18 Mil, Ray 1 yr, $8 Mil).

I guess it's not so bad for a rich club to soak $21m into an unknown commodity. Gotta go all in through Trout and Ohtani's prime years.
