  • As incredible as it seems, the O's will be in playoff position if they win their game tonite.

Edit: O's were rained out tonite, so they are tied w Tampa for the last wildcard spot at 58-52.

      • The unthinkable has happened. After tonite's win, the O's are in sole possession of the last AL playoff spot. They had a MLB-worst 110 losses last year and they are ahead of the team that had an AL-best 100 wins last year. Not in April but on August 12. Coming into today, FG had their playoff odds at 6.0% and havent yet recalculated them.

And yet they traded away Mancini and their All-Star closer. Shameful.

          • Gunnar Henderson will be added to the taxi squad today, which means he'll be active when rosters expand tomorrow.

            • The Orioles sign free agent 1B Jesus Aguilar.

                    • With their win tonite, the O's go the farthest over .500 they've been all year at 70-61. They have a good chance to set the AL record for biggest improvement in wins from 1 year to the next. They already share the current record of +33 w the RedSox. The RedSox improved 33 W from 1945 to '46 and the O's won 33 more in 1989 than in 1988. Last year, the O's won only 52 G so they'd only need to win 86 to set a new record. If they continue at their same win percentage (.534), they'll win at least 86. FG has them projected to finish 83-79. Modern MLB record for biggest increase in wins is 36 by the Giants from 1902 to 1903 and the O's have at least a shot at that record also.

The Pirates are going to miss battling with the Orioles for the top draft pick every year. The future looks bright in Baltimore.

                        • Great outing by Kremer tonite, w a CGSO of the Astros. 4 H, 2 BB, 6 K. Has to be the best game of his career so far. In 2 games so far this weekend, the O's pitching has held Houston to 0 R and 6 H, w the starters pitching to all batters except 1. The O's keep their very slim playoff hopes alive.

                            • A possible reason contributing to the O's unexpected success this year: last year, Camden Yards had the highest HR Park Factor value at 1.574. They moved the left field fence back and this year the HR factor is the 7th lowest in MLB at 0.835.

                              • O's trounced the RedSox tonite, 14-8. They scored in every inning except the 4th and 9th. That got me to wondering when was the last time a team scored in each inning of a 9-inning game. I would have thought that this happened every few years or so. I was surprised to learn that this has happened only twice in modern MLB history. The last time was in 1964 when the Cardinals accomplished this in a 15-2 victory over the Cubs. The other time was when the Giants beat the Phillies in 1923, 22-8.
