Yes, the great melting pot has always been more of a salad bowl.

People stay with who/where they're comfortable. 1st generation immigrants are often not not comfortable with the language and the customs of their new countries, so they naturally tend to band with those that they're more familiar with, hence the pockets of certain immigrants. One you get to the 2nd generation and certainly the 3rd generation, the people disperse dramatically. Here in Minnesota, the children of the Hmong have almost totally assimilated, the children of Somali, Ethiopian, and other African countries are doing almost exactly the same.

Will we always have "Little Italy", "Chinatown", and the like? and frankly, there's nothing wrong with that IMO...

        Exactly.
If DMT didn't exist we would have to invent it. There has to be a weirdest thing. Once we have the concept weird, there has to be a weirdest thing. And DMT is simply it.

The vast majority of immigrants are law-abiding & just want to be allowed to work & support their families. The countries that make that difficult will be the ones that experience conflict.
It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.
