  • Can You Name Every Band/ Musical Artist You've Seen Perform Live?

I thought it might be fun to list'em. All of them. Even ones that are potentially embarrassing, like the ones you took your wife or kids to.

Local bands don't count - stick to bands the rest of us might possibly have heard of.

    * the ones you've seen multiple times. And feel free to include comments.

It'll probably take me a few days to compile my full list, concert whore that I was in the late 80's/ early 90's. But feel free to start your own lists in the meantime.
"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean - neither more nor less."
"The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things."
"The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master - that's all."

This is going to screw up a lot of people's lists.

This could take forever, I have been to over 1000 concerts -- many of them local shows, though.

I do have everything from 2005 to the present written down, but 1986-2004 will require a lot of memory-jogging.

I've saved a bunch of ticket stubs to concerts and sporting events but it is nowhere near complete. There was a time where I could get on guest lists to most shows so I don't have tickets for those, but I suppose those are for bands that most of you haven't heard anyway.
I'm unconsoled I'm lonely, I am so much better than I used to be.

And lastly, I somehow ended up at a Nitty Gritty Dirt Band “special event” concert at Red Rocks in 1989. It was a live gathering of artists from their Will The Circle Be Unbroken 2 record – NGDB, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Chris Hillman and Roger McGuinn, John Hiatt, Levon Helm from The Band, Bruce Hornsby, and every living bluegrass legend under the sun. Dammit, I wish I could rememember the full lineup from that show, I can’t find it anywhere online. It was kinda cool.

Man, I have no idea how many shows I’m forgetting…

Yep; I mean I looked at your list and thought, "Sh*t, Camper Van Beethoven-- saw them in the Student Union at college in 1988, never would've remembered that..."
"There is involved in this struggle the question whether your children and my children shall enjoy the privileges we have enjoyed. I say this in order to impress upon you, if you are not already so impressed, that no small matter should divert us from our great purpose. "

Yea, it would probably be easier to list the bands that I'd like to see but haven't yet. Tops on the list of artists I want to see: David Bowie, Arcade Fire.

But what the hell. I'm sure I will be adding lots more as they pop into my head.

1st show: MC Hammer (I was in 8th grade, and my friend's mom was a news anchor and got us free tickets)
                High school days:
311 (probably a dozen times in tiny venues, moshing my ass off)
                Nirvana (tiny venue)
                Smashing Pumpkins (tiny venue)
                Jane's Addiction
                Metallica
                Guns N Roses
                Nine Inch Nails
                Primus
                Alice in Chains
                Bad Religion
                Phunk Junkeez

                College:
                Phish (many many times)
                Bob Dylan
                Rage Against the Machine
The Roots (played at my college campus)
                Porno for Pyros (same)
                Spin Doctors (same)
                David Grisman Quintet
                Paul Simon
                Dirty Dozen Brass Band
                Anders Osbourne
                Galactic
                Moe.
                String Cheese Incident
                Tori Amos
                Sarah Mclachlan
                Indigo Girls

                The Urge

                Post-college:

                Dave Brubeck
                Ravi & Anoushka Shankar

If DMT didn't exist we would have to invent it. There has to be a weirdest thing. Once we have the concept weird, there has to be a weirdest thing. And DMT is simply it.

It's so depressing to put my list here...because it may be about 10 concerts, if that....

Their show at the Boulder Theater ranks #1 on my all-time Best Concerts list! unk:

Lucky's list helped me fill in a few like Delbert McClinton that I'd forgotten about.

ironically, the first concert I ever went to was The Monkees 20th reunion tour in 1986. RIP Davy Jones.

I can't name everyone that I've seen live in concert, but my list would include Hannah Montana and The Wiggles

Hmm, if we're excluding local bands, my list gets pretty short.

                            Michael W. Smith
                            DC Talk
                            Rush
                            Trout Fishing in America*
                            Bruce Cockburn
                            Kurt Elling
                            Dee Dee Bridgewater
                            Widespread Panic
Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers*
                            Dirty Dozen Brass Band
                            Blind Boys of Alabama
                            Galactic
                            Bela Fleck and the Flecktones
                            Ben Harper
                            Red Hot Chili Peppers
                            Lourdes Perez
                            Diane Reeves

I'm pretty sure I'm forgetting some from SXSW and the New Orleans Jazz Festival as well as others. I've been to maybe two live concerts in the last eight years, so a lot of these are from many moons ago.

                            Edit to add:
                            Ralph Stanley
Trombone Shorty - DMT's list reminded me of him...I have no memory of where I actually saw him, but I know I have...I'm guessing a Jazz Fest
                            Keb Mo

There are another couple big names that I know I'm forgetting. I can picture the concerts in my head, but not who was onstage. Keb Mo opened for someone...Paul Simon maybe? The other one was at the big stage at Jazz Fest 2002. I've also seen various members of Neville and Marsalis clans at Jazz Fest, though I don't remember the particular grouping of each

                            Edit again:
Lenny Kravitz - revo's list reminded me that's who it was at Jazz Fest in 2002

                              Tori Amos
                              Laurie Anderson

                              Genesis
Green Day* (I saw them play in co-op living rooms at Berkeley, same with Primus)
Grateful Dead (only had to see them once to realize I had more fun outside the show than in)
GWAR (craziest show I've ever seen)
John Lee Hooker ($12 in Larry Blake's basement for the greatest living bluesman at the time, insane, he sang Happy Birthday to my wife as she was puking in the bathroom on her 21st birthday)
Huey Lewis* (a zillion times, he used to play high school fundraisers in the bay area, yep, my collar was popped...)

Eddie Money* (he seems to be playing a show at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk every time I'm there)

                              Operation Ivy
Presidents of the United States of America (a gig my boss put on that pretty much got him fired for the debauched boondoggle that it was!)
