three Reds hit by pitch in one inning today [update: four] - first time that's happened since 1974, when Dock Ellis did it on purpose. he hit the first 3 batters, tried to hit the 4th but walked a dodgeball-playing Tony Perez, then went 2-0 on Johnny Bench before the Pirates had seen enough.
"It was a pleasant evening in Pittsburgh, the weather beginning to get warmer, perhaps 55 degrees, when Dock threw the first pitch. "The first pitch to Pete Rose was directed toward his head," as Dock expresses it, "not actually to hit him," but as "the message, to let him know that he was going to get hit. More or less to press his lips. I knew if I could get close to the head that I could get them in the body. Because they're looking to protect their head, they'll give me the body." The next pitch was behind him. "The next one, I hit him in the side."
Pete Rose's response was even more devastating than Dock had anticipated. He smiled. Then he picked the ball up, where it had fallen beside him, and gently, underhand, tossed it back to Dock. Then he lit for first as if trying out for the Olympics.
As Dock says, with huge approval, "You have to be good, to be a hot dog."finished 10th in this 37th yr in 11-team-only NL 5x5

This is an interesting story:

I'd never heard of him before today. He's pitched only 5.7 IP so far as a pro in rookie ball at age 23. Gave up 3 ER, which is a 4.76 ERA but had an 8/1 K/BB ratio. I'll try to remember to check in on him next year.

Potentially drastic changes to the minor leagues and affiliations w MLB:
If the proposal, or some version of it, is adopted, it will lead to the most dramatic restructuring of the minor leagues in more than half a century.
Not a good time to invest in a minor-league franchise. However, despite my love of minor league baseball, I have to say that there are entirely too many minor league teams.

OK, this one may be a bit "politically incorrect" but I think it's hilarious:
Rod Allen, who is quite possibly the most idiotic color commentator in baseball, seen chasing a pitcher in the outfield.
I'd never seen it before today, nor have I ever seen a pitcher run away from a hitter charging the mound. To add to the weirdness of this, he wasn't even hit by the pitch and the pitcher outran him. I vaguely remember Rod Allen as a MLB player but never knew anything much about him. Later on, he physically attacked his longtime Tigers' broadcast partner, Mario Impemba, after a game and was fired along w Impemba.

The Onion, once again ... Rob Manfred Frustrated MLB Season Falling Apart Despite All The Energy He Put Into Wishing It Wouldn’t
NEW YORK—Incredulous that all his work could be for nothing, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred told reporters Wednesday he was frustrated the season is already falling apart despite all the energy he put into wishing it wouldn’t. “I concentrated super hard, squeezed my eyes shut tight, and wished that the MLB season would turn out well, and yet things are still not working out,” said Manfred, who claimed he was in hundreds of meetings with top MLB executives over the past months outlining detailed hopes and prayers they had for a smooth and safe 2020 season. “Nobody talked about keeping players safe harder than me this year. It almost feels like this was going to backfire no matter how much I repeated ‘This will be okay.’ I always believed in the power of coming into work and wanting something real bad every day, but I fell short this time. I just wish I knew what to wish for to stop this.” At press time, Manfred announced a new quarantine plan to fine players $100,000 for contracting coronavirus. It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.

Supreme Court denies MLB's appeal of Circuit Court ruling against MLB affording class action status to minor leaguers on their claim that MLB violated Federal minimum wage laws:
The lawsuit contends that MLB teams have failed to meet minimum wage standards for players for years.
Naturally, I'm rooting for the minor leaguers to win this.
