the setup works like this: the player typically has a very long putt and leaves it way short or well past the hole. they are disappointed, and always expect to have a moment or two to regroup.
there is an art to the comedic timing of exactly at which point to say, "uh, you're still away..." meaning, as noted, everyone else STILL is closer to the hole even after that dismal attempt. this passes for trashtalking in a sport like golf
