  • Lockdown 2020: Not really a HDID

This isn't really a HDID, since I don't believe we can truly evaluate dynasty teams in a 20 team league with anything more than a guess. I play in another dynasty league (it's deep, but not like this), so I have some experience here, and things can turn in a hurry. My goals in this draft were six fold: (1) compete right away, but don't get too old, (2) get a little something in terms of minor leaguers so I am not completely barren, (3) get multi-positional players so I wouldn't have to carry as many offensive bench players, (4) get lots of Ps because aces would be expensive and since our IP minimum is just 700, middle relievers can be useful, (5) if I get the multi-position guys, use most of my bench spots on Ps, and (6) because we're rostering more offensive players than arguably have full or part time jobs in MLB, get enough offensive players that I don't have holes in a particular position. I think I accomplished all 6 to some extent. I think I can compete right away, I got a little something in terms of minor leaguers (Skubal, Duran, Allan, Honeywell, Muller Kowar; side note: wish some of these were offensive prospects), I got several multi-position guys (LeMahieu, McNeil, Torres), and I got lots of Ps I like (McCullers, Boyd, Folty, Musgrove, Odorizzi, Yarbrough). Of course, we won't know if this strategy works for several years!

Having Mondesi, Anderson, Hernandez, and Cron in your lineup are really going to put a strain on your OBP...I'm not sure that your batting stats can recover from that. Granted it's only 1 category, but it could be enough to sink a money slot run. Decent power, good speed, and versatility are major pluses.

Starting pitching is a lot of Meh, relievers are a net positive, albeit a little long in the tooth. Some of the kids might help you, but rookie pitchers have a fairly questionable track record, IIRC.

Overall, it's a good team, not great, but I don't think that there's any such thing as a great team in a startup 20 team dynasty with very good owners.

If your number 1 goal is to compete right it is hard not to compare your team with Knuckleballs since you were right next to each other. I'm not sure you have the bullets to challenge for the top spot the next couple years, but you are certainly in the top half of the teams. I agree that OBP is going to be an issue but as long as Mondesi is healthy you have speed covered and will compete in power and the other counting stats. Pitching is not top notch but I would say it is solidly average however you have nice upside with minor guys like Honeywell, Skubal, and McClanahan. On the minors side I do like your pitching but I like to invest in hitters and I think your hitters probably lag behind the what I would consider league average.

I will agree with the other assessments, OBP looks like a big hole to climb out of. I strongly considered Mondesi in rd. 3, but I knew he would require an OBP specialist to balance out, and I didn't want to be stuck with the hole. Adding Teoscar, Cron, and Tim Anderson widens that hole significantly. If you want to compete right away, you'll need to figure out this weak point.

Pitching is okay. I really don't like McCullers where you took him. Could have had a few better established arms here. Not a terrible player by any means, simply taken too early and now needs to be your ace. Boyd seems unlikely to completely solve his HR issues, Musgrove is a vet that I like. But the depth is lacking, and you're relying on 3 SP with way too many question marks to project a top tier staff. However, if the SP gambles work out, you did a good job getting closers to compete in SV+HLD. If you fail to contend, I believe closers will make decent trade chips.

Prospects, I don't want to talk about. You swiped a few guys from me that seriously irritated me, so good job there.
