12TO NL Only Auction Results and HDID

My oldest league, started back in 2000, 12 team NL Only 5x5

Came in with a decent set of keepers, but nowhere near the best in the league...

Only kept the 8 and I stretched some to do that. No farm guys that will help me this year.

I decided I would do my best to build my offense, get 2 SP's at least that can help with K's and most likely punt K's. I allocated $75 to get 2 big bats probably OF. From those lists of bats I wanted at least one guy with speed and one guy more power. So I made some combos I wouldn't mind in hopes $75 would get it done.

It is a one catcher league and JT was the first throw and only went for $20. In the end that would have been a decent buy just for the stats. Ketel Marte was next at $42 and I was in until about 39, Machado then went for $40 and I decided to pass. Betts went for $57 and surprised me no one pushed more, but I didn't have the money for that anyway. Villar for $33 almost had me move money around and get him, but again I passed on the bidding at 33. I got Pham next for $36, he was a target and gave me speed power combo and a good avg. Hendricks went for $23 and in the end I should have at least bid to $23 because later on we will see there are no discounts on pitching. Harper 52, Arenado 53 and Blackmon 49 so none of those buys worked for my budget.

Pitchers had flown off the board at prices I could not afford (Castillo 37,Scherzer 42, Thor 29) I had allocated 25 for a MI or 3B. The only 3b in that real range was Justin Turner.
There were a few MI's, Didi, Segura, and Dejong. Didi came out first and I went $1 over my budget and got him for $26. I think he will do well in Philly.

Starling Marte went for 57 so that was a pipe dram and now I am in a little bind. Rizzo went for 42 and we were now down to Goldy and Castellanos as power type bats. I got Nick castellanos for $40, we can look back and say maybe Machado or even Ketel would have been better, but I do like Nick 30 HR and good BA with rbi's and runs are what I expect.

I spent $76 and got two of my targets and one of my combos, now I guess the question is did I plan well or not because I did execute it. I had MI for $26 filled too, so I was $2 ove budget.

Time to focus on pitching and this is where the auction didn't go exactly as planned. Price goes for 27, Bumgarner 26, and C-Mart 26. Bauer went for 31 and Nola for 29. Stroman went for 16 but I didnt' really want him. So now we are down to Robbie Ray and Joe Musgrove and I know I need to go over 15. I pushed Musgrove to 18 but let him go and the next throw was Ray and I went to 21. I can debate what I should have done, but in the end pitching went for more than I thought and I had to pay for someone. I needed another SP for K's and the list of reliable K pitchers left was Jon Gray. Hornsby and I went back and forth from about $12 and I won him for $16. $37 later I had bought about 385 K's and hopefully 25 w's.

Ok now I am running on a tight budget and still need a few spots. Jeff Samardzija came out and I won him for $4 which I thought was great for this format. 145 K's and a guy that usually can pitch for $4. Then I got Matt Carpenter for $6 to cover CI. Again this isn't a flashy buy but a little bit of a rebound in power ba seems likely so I'll take this. Alex Dickerson for $9 is probably the end game type buy that least excited me. Needed an OF and people were bidding as we ran out of options. Filled the end of my OF with Harold Ramirez for $2. This is me putting blind faith in the rotowire software.

Started really filling out with cheap guys now, Ryan Helsley for $2. Maybe he gets some saves. Kurt Suzuki for $3, even in a one catcher league I wanted someone that wasn't tota drek and we were getting to that point.

Ryan Zimmerman for $3 is my last player who isn't a $1. Just trying to buy boring stats at this point. I got Brian Dozier for $1 too, a little surprised no one went $2. Sure last year was bad but for $1 this isn't bad.

People with the hammer topped me a few times with my $1 bids as I tried to fill my pitching staff. Eventually wound up with Amir Garrett, Cal Quantril, Yolmer Sanchez, Ben Gamel, Pedro Baez, Luke Jackson, and Matt Strahm all for $1.

If I may add context, as we are not in normal times. We auctioned last night, this lot of 12, most of us in the league for many years, despite being at the start of a pandemic. We have zero idea when we will have baseball played again. Real life is getting real dark. Crowds at BJ's like this is day before the zombie apocalypse and everyone is filling their carts with canned green beans and cases of pasta as if we are restarting a colony on another planet.

We did the auction, as a fun diversion, and hopefully we get a good portion of the season salvaged. But if we dont, I hope I dont need to go medieval to grab the toilet paper rolls as people are hoarding them and it is pissing me off. The 1st 5 names off the boards I thought we good values. JT Realmuto at $20, in this league with this inflation? Maybe because he was 1st dude named and we werent ready to roll yet, but that seems very light. Machado at 40 and K Marte at 42, right off bat that seemed like good deals. And the prize pumpkin of the fair came off boards, Betts at 57. I wish I had it in me to pull trigger but I was trying to keep a spread the wealth on my lineup. But yes, to me those were good numbers.

Keith, you got some deals. But the overpays to me look like a 26 didi gregorious. pham i am not huge fan of at 36, and n castellanos i was targeting myself, but he seems bit too high at 40 even with our inflation. but i get what happened as i was caught in that part where you are running out of big bats and you have a budget to spend. m conforto at 31 or n castellanos at 40? to me, i prefer conforto knowing the forced break will mean no need to apply an injury penalty, at least on historical stats m conforto looks like the bigger, more reliable, and still young power bat.

Pitching, dude, i am the numbnut who got played on c martinez. jc threw a 25 start, and i hit the + 1 button thinking it was a $2 bid. This was my 1st buy of night, so right off bat i broke my budget and was bummed, as in i walked into living room, set my couch on fire, and threw it out the window. Ok, just in my mind, I am not insane, but i smashed a couple beers and thought about sniping JC bids to get my revenge. I like CMart, had him circled at 21, so I overpayed by 5, no biggie in grand scheme. My big 3 sp I think give me a strong pitching base, with Stras, YU, and CMart, and still managed to get a few other legit sp's like c archer 8, d hudson 5.

You worked 2nd half well, as Jeff Sam at $4 is sweet, and B Dozier at $1 is oddly cheap. I dont think this is a championship team. We have a couple teams with such packed pre auction headstarts that its a tough road, but I like to see your thought process. Upper half team.

I got you in the top of the glob that I referenced in Glen's post - so 4th per RotoLab but within 10 points of 7 other teams below you and 9 below the 3rd place team which I have as Jobs Rum. Pitching is what is bringing you down right now as you don't have a Closer (but Lugo might if its the bad Diaz again and who knows about StL). Thus, things could break well for you in Saves but think you'll want to add a true stub if possible. I got your ERA a little high as well but that's where the software is limited since I know how you play and thus you'll stream MRs to avoid bad matchups thereby better managing your ratios.

I also think you'll need to find 20-30 SBs which can be had via trade in this league if you're willing to push in. I do not like Pham this year as injury scares me so that is probably my least favorite buy of yours. If he ends up ok and healthy though I think he'll earn it. Just risky.

Castellanos at $40 is a bit rich but he was amazing in 2H last year and its a great ballpark. But he needs to be that kind of player for the season to be worth this so you're just paying for ceiling is all.

Like Glen said, upper half team for sure but work to be done.
