Well, that's actually a good point. There are a lot of guys on the 40-man roster (which makes them MLBPA, I believe) who were not bonus babies and who have not had significant major-league playing time. Unless they are independently wealthy, they aren't rich by any means. I sort of new a guy (former neighbor's brother) who basically had one year in the majors (half on the DL) and floated around the upper minors for several years thereafter. He was always desperate for a call up--two weeks on a major league roster would have doubled his yearly pay. Alas, it never happened.

      • The MLBPA is prepared to offer a deferral of a percentage of player salaries for this year, and MLB is prepared to scrap the 50-50 revenue sharing idea they proposed, which is a good start. Both sides are expected to discuss their economic proposals on Tuesday.

There's a good start and a good sign. Time is running out for the schedule, and this is happening right on time. Maybe something will happen after all.

There’s no question a season will happen now. The NBA & NHL are moving along, having their players and owners readily agree on all measures and parameters as they move forward. At this point, MLB simply couldn’t use the virus as an excuse if things fall apart, which means they have no alternative. They have fo find a middleground.

You are clearly not as cynical as I am. There are still plenty of ways for these warring parties to screw everything to hell.

                • Just in case you thought there's no golden opportunity for baseball......."The Match II", a golf event with Tiger, Mickelson, Peyton Manning & Tom Brady drew the highest audience ever for a cable golf match.

This is why it is a shame that it seems impossible to renegotiate the tv deal. Rating will be sky high with no live attendance. It would solve a lot if they could get a kick up in revenue for the increased viewership.

There are many ways they could exploit this:
                      - increased stadium advertising that will be viewable on TV, including on-field ads (like they do for soccer & rugby)
                      - increased sponsorship deals
                      - brand logos on uniforms & caps
Heck, they could even do what horse racing & college football do, and sell sponsorships to teams ("The Mastercard NY Yankees")

Still, they need to strike while the iron is hot. Once MLB, the NBA & the NHL return, all is back to normal. They have a good month to themselves.

Yes, as you have long said, they would be foolish to lose this opportunity. But as others said, until the deal is done, we don't know for certain that they are not fools.

I'm hoping past performance does not indicate future results.

Edit to add - But I really wonder. The Angels are said to be making steep cuts and furloughs. The Brewers, OTOH, have committed to paying all staff through October, with higher paid employees taking pay cuts for 2020.

                              • The A's are furloughing their entire scouting division, and will no longer pay minor leaguers their salary after May 31.
