Ok, so I will break this into a few posts as I am sure a few people will want to post these. I'll write up my team first and then I will post the keepers and the auction buys for all the teams.
15 team mixed, 10 keepers and 7 farm player rosters.
I came into the auction with following keepers
2b Albies $10
3b Matt Chapman $13
SS Kevin Newman $5
CI R McMahon $5
MI B Lowe $5
OF L Gurriel $5
OF A Verdugo $5
P C Kershaw $23
P L Castillo $10
P J Flaherty $5
So I had spent $86 and $174 left to buy the rest of my team. I also had Gavin Lux on my farm and a glut of MI. Before the season I had already traded an expiring $10 Corey Seager for a year 2 $5 Gurriel to give me some flexibility. So with Lux waiting to come up, I knew I needed to leave a UT spot for him. I also knew Verdugo may start the year so the plan was to buy an OF at that UT spot to fill in for him. I had 3 good SP's to anchor my staff and didn't plan to spend on any big SP's.
I'll list the initial plan and then the pivot. I generally try to make an estimate of how much I want to spend on a spot but also be flexible with the expensive guys and adjust money as needed.
The initial plan was to spend $105 on 3 hitters, 2 OF'ers and a 1B. Try to get 1 more reliable SP for about $15. Try to get 2 closers or sort of closers for about $20. The rest of the fill-in values would go to 2 catchers, a 5th OF, a UT, and 3 pitchers at least 2 starters.
So I had tiered the OF'ers, 1B, and SP's I thought I could get and I had made a list of closers I would buy. So OF had the biggest studs available and I knew I wanted 1 for sure and maybe 2. OF had Trout, Betts, Harper, JD Martinez, S Marte, Springer, and Blackmon. 1B had Freeman, Goldy, Rizzo, and J Abreu.
Trout was thrown first and went for $62. Freeman went $47 early too. Betts went for $55. The next guy up from my list was JD Martinez and I was in on him. I got him for $48. Sort of a push to me on Freeman vs JD. Harper goes for $46 and Marte is out and again I am in. I wound up getting him for $40 and was fine with that. I was now at $88 on two guys so adjustments needed to be made. I decided after Freeman I didn't really want to spend 35 for Goldy (33), Rizzo (36) or Abreu (37) so I didn't get in on any of them.
The only guys in that sort of in-between tier at 1B were EE and then a drop to Hosmer. EE went for $24 and maybe I should have bid, but I decided to push the money into bumping up for better closers. Hosmer went for $15 again maybe I should have but I wanted to hold the money and be flexible.
The next buy for me was my reliable boring SP 4 type. I was happy to get Kyle Hendricks for $12. I have 3 guys that can be awesome, for this spot I just wanted some stability. When you see the other pitcher prices in the next post I think this was a good price.
With 1b now just a bunch of similar crap and me have 4 OF'er and C also being crap while SP's were all being pushed up I decided the best investment for me winning was to get two of the closers. Yes, closer is hard to predict, but these prices weren't crazy for a keeper league. Anyway, the first closer buy was Brad Hand for $15. Next throw was Edwin Diaz and I bought him for $14. 1B money reallocated to a closer plan executed. The other closers ahead of them had gone much earlier before my pivot, Osuna $22 and Chapman $25 and Jansen for $18. After my guys Iglesias went $11, Giles $13, Leclerc $11, Gallogos $11, and Bradley $12 were the last of the double-digit closer types I think. So overall I am happy with it and just hope for the best from them.
I was short power at this point and had targetted Justin Upton, but he went for $17. My pivot here was to JD Davis who I got for $12. Continuing to adjust money I pushed a little more money to my first catcher and bought Christian Vazquez for 8. We are a two catcher league so this will be ugly and I wanted one I didn't hate.
So I now have 1 C spot, 1B, UT, and 3 pitcher slots left. So I started to make a list of SPs I'd like in my SP 5 slot. German Marquez was interesting to me because big k's work well with the ratio anchors I had, but he went for $8. Andrew Heaney got pushed all the way to $13 and my limit here was $7 in my mind. I tossed Sandy Alcantara and got him for $3. Not too pricey and a little bit of room to grow still. A few tosses later James McCann was out and I bid $2 and had my 2nd catcher.
1B UT and 2 pitchers left. I was now looking for anything usable at 1B. I had laid off Joc Pederson at $9 and maybe I shouldn't have. Came up short on Renato Nunez as he went for $12 and in the end, got into a back and forth bidding situation on Danny Murphy who I begrudgingly rostered for $11. Here is to hoping Ryan McMahon plays 5 games at 1B this year. As for Murphy Shandler still likes him and it feels like the Rockies have to play him if he is healthy.
1 UT and 2 pitchers. I wanted at least one big upside SP. I had missed on Josh James as he went for $9 and my next target of a big upside guy was Dylan Cease. Sure he could be trash but we do 10 rounds of RSV and I will get some boring guys there eventually. Tossed Cease and wound up getting him for $4.
Ok so with Verdugo out for probably a while I wanted an OF here and I decided to focus on Tauchman. He has some upside and has a job early when I need him. If he shows he can play maybe he has the job all year, if not he probably has a job until Verdugo is back. Tauchman for $4.
The last slot I looked for SP's I wanted, but I knew the reserve would give me guys like that and with how tight our cap is early it is nice to have a very cheap MR you can use for bad weeks or tight cap times. Best MR on the board also happens to be a met and a bit of Diaz insurance, Seth Lugo welcome aboard for $1.
We did 2 rounds of reserve and while I did look at hitters to get some depth nothing stood out so I decided to take one if he is healthy he could be good SP and one boring guy that I can always just use. Nate Eovaldi was my round 1 RSV and Kyle Gibson my rd 2. We still have 8 rounds left, but I now have my pitching depth and already have Lux as hitter depth.
So how does it look...
C. C Vazquez $8
C J McCann $2
1B D Murphy $11
2b Albies $10
SS K Newman $5
3b M Champan $13
MI B Lowe $5
CI R McMahon $5
OF L Gurriel $5
OF A Verdugo $5
OF JD Martinez $48
OF S Marte $40
OF JD Davis $12
UT M Tauchman $4
Farm Gavin Lux $5 and Brendan Rodgers $5
P C Kershaw $23
P L Castillo $10
P J Flaherty $5
P K Hendricks $12
P S Alcantara $3
P D Cease $4
P B Hand $15
P E Diaz $14
P S Lugo $1
RSV N Eovaldi
RSV K Gibson
Walking out I balanced my categories well. I think my pitching is strong and I can be in the top 1/4 of each category. Hitting I am not as sold that it is great, but BA is good and speed should be good especially adding Lux. Might be a little short in power, but we will see lots of RSV draft yet to go.
All thoughts welcome, thanks.
