  • NFBC $150 Draft Champions - Big Tymers

    So realized yesterday that the site that hosts this is the same site I had a bunch of best-ball winnings from last year in football so decided to put a team in. First time NFBC, long time player. Love the 50 round, no trade, no move format as I generally feel like one of my strengths is roster construction during the draft and deep player pool knowledge. Guess we'll see.

    They let you prioritize draft position slots and I generally came away from with the view that I wanted a top-8 pick or else close to the wheel. Just didn't love the 9-12 range of players as I like the normal top-5 hitters, Cole + DeGrom, and have always had an affinity for Turner. SBs are also scarce so coming out of the first with someone like Turner would not be a bad outcome. So of course, I drew the 8th pick (had 10th priority selection) but am cool with that. Kind of like being in the middle so that you don't get caught with runs as much.

    Even though this is my first time with NFBC, goes without saying that we know SP goes quickly. This will be tough for me as I generally don't chase aces but in a vacuum I'd want to come out of the first 3 rounds with 2 hitters and 1 SP. A lot will depend on who is there at 8. Even though I love Turner I'd still probably take Cole or DeGrom over him to secure a true ace though I'd take Betts over DeGrom were I to have that choice (expect not to).

    Expecting it will be Turner in the 1st, my initial bias is towards hitter in the 2nd with JD, Harper, Devers the likely candidates. Love Rendon but league change is always something I'm wary of so he's a candidate but likely 4th of this group.

    Will update periodically as this progresses but I know others have posted their drafts in years past which I always appreciated following so will do the same here.

    4-Hour Clock btw.

    ROSTER:. Will list alternative positions for players who qualify at > 1 since positional flexibility is huge in a format like this

    PICK COMMENTARY: Will add commentary here vs. posts to make this easier to read / follow
    ROUND 1: Happy to get Betts this late. Pretty high floor and 5 category contributor.
    ROUND 2: Well, didn't see this happening. Tatis has been going late 1st so will roll the dice on the youngster. Nice base of SBs to start off with.
    ROUND 3: Got sniped. Snell and Castillo were the guys I targeted and they went right before me. Sensing a run, I'm grabbing a SP here and likely double-tapping next pick. I "think" one of the 2 I want will be there in the 4th so taking Giolito now due to higher K potential, awesome 2H performance LY, improving team context and great new pitch framer. #upside
    ROUND 4: This is where I'm taking guidance from those who've done this before. Almost took Kershaw last round so easy pick and nice floor to Giolito's ceiling. Hitter would have been Hiura fwiw.
    ROUND 5: Had my eye on Manny for awhile and he made it to me. 3B/SS eligible and expect him to be more relaxed in year-2.
    ROUND 6: This is a "get your guy" moment. His Min was 81 and this was 83 but wasn't confident he'd make it back as best "2B" available. (A) My son loves him but (B) more important, I love his power and potential at Great American Ballpark. A 2B who could hit 40 HR is a huge advantage but will need to find SBs soon. Eddie Rosario was the alternative option fwiw with Gary Sanchez considered.
    ROUND 7: 2nd time I've passed on Sanchez but need 5 OF and only had 1. Soler was a badass LY and 2 spring bombs are a nice start. Was tempted by Gallo but Soler might hit as many HR but without the BA drain.
    ROUND 8: Sniped again on Rogers this time. This was a planned Closer round as run always happens here and why I like the middle. Choice was between Hand, Giles and Jansen and all have questions imo. Jansen is falling and betting on the market over-reacting (and Dodgers winning a lot).
    ROUND 9: Wow - glad I took a closer last round. I'm sticking to my plan which was speed this round and ideally with some BA to continue to build cushion to absorb < avg BA-guys later. I also love SS, need a MI and think the best of Rosario is yet to come. SP next round and a bit of a focus from here as I look to get 1 more CL, a 1st C, a 1B and a bunch of SPs in the rounds to come.
    ROUND 10: Needed a SP and came down to Robbie Ray or Fried. Love Ray's strikeouts but going with the "better" pitcher who may well breakout in 2020.
    ROUND 11: 2 catcher league and wanted 1 good catcher. IMO that meant Pérez or Ramos and decided not to gamble and grabbed one here. Ray was still available but sticking to my plan.
    ROUND 12: Minor or Maeda. Like both but had to pick one and here’s hoping Maeda finally gets a full workload (and does well with it). Great team and division to pitch in.
    ROUND 13: Minor was still there but NOTHING is left at Closer and I’m of the opinion Smith wins out eventually.
    ROUND 14: I liked Ramos a few rounds ago so will take value where the draft gives it and build a positional advantage at C
    ROUND 15: Ok. I still need a 1B but I also need 3 OF and can’t let my boy Senzel stay out there. Even if he misses time I can sub someone in and he gives me double digit steals with some power which is a nice combo. 1B targets will be Votto/Hosmer next round but still like Upton and Grisham in maybe another round so we’ll see.
    ROUND 16: Distressed stock but I still don’t think Votto is done. His high pick over the last month is just a few spots higher than I took him but he’s been in my queue for a few rounds now.
    ROUND 17: Thought about a SP and a Utility Knife player but getting 30HRs and 80RBIs seemed the best play. Grichuk isn't sexy but he has a big contract and isn't going anywhere.
    ROUND 18: To hell with ADP. Over past month Schoop's Min pick has been 239 (picked him at 263) but his ADP was over 330. I don't get this because his PT should be stable, he's hitting middle of the order and he'll give you 25HRs 70R/RBI and an average around .265. There were other players I considered but getting those stats at 2B to allow me to move Moustakas to CI and better leverage his MI/CI flexibility gives me option value down the line. Now I have 2 players that qualify 2B, 2 at 3B and 3 at SS. At some point I'll need to get SP but with 4 on the staff I plan to load up and stream since we're in the "glob"
    ROUND 19: Apparently I like the Reds offense TY. I wanted some BA and some SBs so with that and Rotolab I landed on Akiyama. Fits well with Senzel as a hedge but clearly I need both to play. Will likely go OF in UT just to be safe. Continuing to skip SP as I can't differentiate the "glob" at this point.
    ROUND 20: Initially thought about a "safer" SP but came around to the view that I want "quality" innings vs. just innings. Not sure when May will be be up but should get ~100 innings from him and if I can pair him with a Stripling or Wood later I should be able to "frankenstein" a SP3 which is better than what I'd get here with someone like Chirinos who I might grab if he's still there next round.
    ROUND 21: Ok. I "should" have gone SP here but Teoscar was the highest player on my board and I needed a UT. This gives me per RotoLab the #1 offense right now so #winning . I still like a lot of SP and RP left so will now "really" shift focus to pitching. But Teoscar gives me 30 HRs and high-single SBs albeit with a bad average but one that I can absorb given rest of the roster.
    ROUND 22: So here's Part II of my "frankenstein" SP3 strategy for LAD. Stripling + May (+ Wood if I can get him next - EDIT - he went a few picks later) should combine for a badass SP that I can toggle throughout the season.
    ROUND 23: What am I missing? Yonny's ADP was 284 in this setup with MIN of 230 and MAX (before now) of 325. This is pick 338. Owned him in RJEL LY and this is a very solid, if unspectacular pitcher. TBD how he's used whether as a traditional SP or with an Opener in TB but the Opener is a great setup to allow pitchers to go deeper and get more Wins so either way seems like a good get and just don't start him against the NYY.
    ROUND 24: Wanted a backup 1B with some BA and landed on Evan White. Will likely back this up later on with a boring vet but figure better to go for some upside and he's hitting well this spring.
    ROUND 25: Castillo was almost the pick last round so this one is easy as I try and get a few speculative save options
    ROUND 26: Thought about a boring vet like Fiers/Sanchez/Arrieta but figured better to get another speculative closer before the last few are gone. Sure seems like Hirano will get a shot to start the year in the 9th. Now, whether he can stay there is anyone's guess but the league switch could work in his favor in this case with hitters not having seen him much before.
    ROUND 27: With Votto as my primary 1B I continue to hedge this and also get backups at CI and UT. White is unproven so wanted a vet and Miggy gets me a high average like Votto to slot in if need be. Maybe we get a dead-cat bounce too....
    ROUND 28: Start him at Home (2019 stats at Home of 102 IP, 2.91 ERA, 1.05 WHIP) - seems pretty simple and a good player for this format to stream
    ROUND 29: More SP depth to stream based on matchups
    ROUND 30: Was great in the KBO and at this point just looking for good arms with a chance to start and stream. Considered Rich Hill but who knows what we’ll get from Hill this year and when we’ll get it.
    ROUND 31: Boring vet with playing time filling a need as backup 3B. Check.
    ROUND 32: Nick Anderson is no sure thing (though still like him) so grabbing 2 of the other options in TB
    ROUND 33: Backup C. Nothing to see here.
    ROUND 34: I'll grab another boring vet next but wanted one of "my guys" and so took Kirilloff here as the kids seem to be going quickly and unexpectedly. Not sure where he plays TY but talent is there and buy skills not roles.
    ROUND 35: Gordon will get ABs in KC and at this point in the draft that's all I'm looking for in a backup OF
    ROUND 36: My pick was up the same time as the story on Rotoworld appeared about a possible extension for Ke'Bryan Hayes. #diceroll
    ROUND 37: So with that lottery ticket in last round back to harvesting depth as the vets fall in favor of shiny new toys. Kike gives depth at both 2B and OF and with several HRs this spring maybe we see something.
    ROUND 38: Someone will save games in Miami and likely multiple someones. Here's hoping Garcia gets a piece of that (small) pie.
    ROUND 39: Just takes 1 injury to Atlanta OF I think for Pache to make the 45 minute drive from AAA. As good a shot as any with no long term commitment to Markakis.
    ROUND 40: He can share the Uber with Pache when they get called up this year.
    ROUND 41: Might as well back up Jansen with Graterol who could well have standalone value in a swing or setup role.
    ROUND 42: In a shortened season, I'm giving a bump to the injured guys since all of a sudden their % of the season lost goes down
    ROUND 43: Slight hedge for Will Smith but also just a really good MR
    ROUND 44: Vaughn is awesome so will take a shot he's up by July vs. the other bat alternatives at this point
    ROUND 45: Handcuff catcher to Sal Perez
    ROUND 46: Wade Davis sucks. Not sure if Estevez is 3 or 4 in pecking order but someone besides Davis will close games in COL
    ROUND 47: Just takes 1 injury but Marsh should be up at some point (in theory now I guess) and possesses good speed
    ROUND 48: Rooker is also in AAA and OF for MIN like Kirilloff. Thus, this is a hedge as both are ready and bat-first options
    ROUND 49: Fairbanks came over for Nick Solak LY so TB obviously liked him. Didn't pitch well LY but a spec save option w/ Castillo/Alvarado
    ROUND 50: I was so excited about this guy as a prospect a few years ago. Lost LY to injury but great dart throw I figured.

    RUNNING TOTALS FROM ROTOLAB IN TERMS OF COUNTING AND RATE STATS:
    BA = .269
    HR = 353
    R = 1061
    RBI = 1058
    SB = 121 (yay! - wanted 120)

    W = 81
    S = 50
    K = 1243
    ERA = 3.72
    WHIP = 1.18

      A little surprised to see deGrom go #4 ahead of Bellinger. I could maybe be convinced of Cole there but to me Bellinger is a lock #4. Will come down between Betts and Turner it seems like. I'll take it.

      EDIT: So Turner went #7 so Mookie fell to me. #allday

        Agree on the deGrom call, and getting Mookie at #8 is very nice.

          Ok - so Round 1 went well as I would have taken Betts at #5 so some value there. Will likely go bat in round 2 unless someone like Strasburg / Scherzer fall but don't see it. Will be tempted by Bieber/Flaherty but suspect it will be Harper/JD/Devers/Rendon. With an OF in the bank might lean towards IF. Wildcard pick might be Gleyber Torres as he qualifies at 2B/SS so you get the flexibility and 2B is TERRIBLE this year. Torres Min Pick in this format is #15 so wouldn't be the high pick were I to pop him but 8 spots above his ADP to the extent that matters (and to me it doesn't).

            What pitchers other than Cole and DeGrom have been taken so far?

            One small negative...I suspect the park and the new league will nick Mookie a bit. Still a great pick, but that might explain why he fell.

              Steve - I'll update the picks as they happen (and I'm around to update) in the original post. So far, just 8 total picks and just deGrom and Cole are gone. ADP would suggest Verlander, Buehler, Scherzer will be gone by #23 and then who knows. Strasburg ADP is actually #28 whereas Flaherty is #20 and Bieber is #26.

              I'll gamble on health with Strasburg over those 2 if he's around. Otherwise hitter.

              And on park, I recently heard on a podcast (not sure which one as I listen to like 5) that LAD is playing more as a hitters park due to rising temps. Mookie hit a lot to center which might actually help him with this shift but at the top of the Dodgers lineup he'll score a shitload of Runs that's for sure.

                Walker Buehler and Juan Soto just went off the board at 9 and 10. Seems high but I think in this format with a grand champion we'll see a lot of ADP thrown out the window.

                  Up in 4 picks. Pretty sure leaning hitter with one of these 4 as I changed my mind a little: Tatis, Freeman, Ramirez, Harper

                  Wasn't considering Freeman or Ramirez but they've fallen and maybe they will fall some more. Looking at 1B pool, its not awesome and Freeman would add to BA and also chips in 6-8 SBs. I've owned Ramirez the last 3 seasons so have seen the good and bad. With an overall winner, hard to not look at the upside of 2018 in the middle of round 2. SBs are great but 3B is really deep so not sure I want to grab one early after all.

                    Your draft seems to be moving along at a crisper pace than the RJ league. I guess with $ involved, people are more engaged.

                    Both 4 hour drafts.

                      Stalled out for past 2 hours but that happens in a slow draft. I opted for the 4-hour one as I know at work during the week that will be a huge help. Wish they had an option where it was 2-hours Sat-Sun and 4 M-F.

                      Next pick should come down between Tatis, Harper and Freeman....

                        Love this. I need to post mine at some point too. I love Freeman if he is somehow there. I mean, I'd take Max if he made it but I'm sure he won't. Harper is good too. I'm a little down on Bieber based on the hard hit stats last year, and that's a pretty high pick for Strasburg but he's my guy in that 2nd tier so I'd be tempted.

                          So suspect the Giolito pick will be debated. All I've ever heard from these leagues from owners like Keith and JC and others is the need for SP as they go quick. 3 went right before me so as much as I was tempted to go offense I felt it prudent to take a SP and potentially another in the 4th.

                          Castillo and Snell would have been my picks but alas others felt the same. Sale scares the shit out of me. By any ranking he "should" have been the pick but I just don't want damaged good before the season even starts. Risk/rewards for sure but not for me. So after Sale, its guys like Kershaw/Morton/Giolito/Paddack/Darvish. Ideally one of these is there in the 4th to double tap. Giolito to me is the highest upside of this group for Ks and I like the team/division context. Kershaw or Paddack would be a great pairing for Giolito but we'll see what happens over next 15 picks...

                            I like Giolito better than Snell and have him essentially equal to Castillo. They both have monster upside. Even with Sale's risk, I'm surprised to see him last this long. All the mocks I've been in have him going from early 20s to early 30s.
                            I'm just here for the baseball.

                              I have zero interest in Sale even at a discount... but maybe in the 4th round I'd be starting to think about it. I love Darvish. I think the Giolito pick is good... pitching definitely does get scarce fast.
