  • Man, it's really hard to read some of the news from Italy, but some hope.

Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio hopes his country will be first in Europe to get over the emergency.

Two weeks after the first 10 towns in northern Italy were declared a "red zone" and put under lockdown, he said they had no new infections.

This then served as a model to tighten measures across the country.

Italy has now seen 1,016 deaths, amid a total number 15,113 infections. Civil protection officials say 1,258 have recovered, although the number of cases has gone up by 2,651 since Wednesday. Italy is the world's worst-hit country after China.

"Italy was the first nation in Europe to be affected so badly," said Mr Di Maio. "But I hope it also means that Italy is the first one to leave the emergency behind."

Movement has been limited to urgent medical or professional need. All shops are now closed, except for pharmacies and those stocking food; companies have been ordered to shut non-essential departments; a wide range of venues - from theatres to schools and hairdressers to museums - are closed.

    • This isn't even really about the virus anymore as much as it is the economic devastation that's only just started to occur.

Almost every person I know works in the service industry Casinos, Live Performing Arts, Hospitality Food Service...…...every one of them is having events cancelled--Playes, Concerts, Sporting events, conventions and the Casinos are cancelling Poker Tournaments and are operating at minimal capacity. It's only going to get worse. I hope everyone is set to weather this because I can already foresee the public safety net programs like UI, SNAP at all being overwhelmed in the near future.

              • Today is a challenging day - The county (Bergen New Jersey) ordered schools to be closed end of day today. Keeping middle school kids calm, occupied, entertained will be an adventure

We are still scheduled for a teacher only day on Monday to learn/practice on-line learning - no idea if it will still happen.

Next week the students are expected to log in on their computers for each class based on a half day modified schedule and then teachers should also be available in the afternoon for the next 2 weeks at least.

I will happily be there as an instructor and a friendly face for them - we all need to stay connected. We are lucky to have this ability to connect - many school districts have serious problems like "how do we get the free breakfast and lunch to the kids?" We have "my internet bandwidth is not great"

I wish all the potential stay at home parents good, healthy times with their kids and if they need middle school things (or even younger/older) to watch/do let me know.

Yep, in Montclair we have rich and we have poor, so we're trying to survey who may not have a device or internet access at home, get them resources (e.g., Chromebook, hotspot), figure out if/how we can make meals available to free-and-reduced lunch families, and figure out to what extent we can expect students to log-on for live instruction if one or two devices have to be shared among two working-from-home parents and two or three learning-from-home kids. It's looking like most of my kids' instruction will be "on your own time; at your own pace" videos, materials and assignments they can access whenever they can get on their device, with teachers on call for support. But they're working that out today (schools closed to kids but open to staff) and will probably provide more guidance by the end of the day. They haven't officially announced that kids won't be coming back on Monday, but I'd say it's very likely they won't.

Meanwhile, I have to run a virtual PTA meeting later this morning with few definitive answers that I can provide to anxious parents.

                  • Time for an update. Last stats were from just 3 days ago, 3/10 at 12:09 AM:

                    - 1832 cases in US, up from 753, a 143% increase
                    - 41 deaths in US, up from 27, a 52% increase. 7 states now have coronavirus deaths.
                    - 47 states, plus DC, have confirmed cases. The only states w/o a confirmed case are W. Virginia, Alabama and Idaho.
                    - 138,517 cases worldwide, up from 114,538, a 21% increase. 57,705 of these are outside of mainland China. I didn't record the non-China cases before but China is not reporting many new cases now and I would estimate the previous non-China cases to be around 37,000 so today's figure would be around a 56% or so increase.
                    - 5082 deaths worldwide, up from 4027, a 26% increase. 1906 deaths are outside of China, up from 891, a 139% increase. China has reported only 40 deaths since the last post. The reliability of stats coming out of China is extremely questionable to put it mildly but they apparently have dramatically decreased the severity of the outbreak there, altho some of their methods are reminiscent of Nazi Germany.
                    - 133 countries/territories/etc. have confirmed cases w suspected cases in 3 others, up from 114. About 11 of these are not actual countries, so about 62% of the world's countries have at least 1 case.

Before, I was wondering how accurate Liz Specht's assumption of the # of US cases doubling every 6 days was but now it appears to have been conservative.

                    • Some stats from Italy - should be a bit comforting for those with kids/young adults who may be freaking out somewhat (as I do) ...

Of 13,882 cases, there have been 2 deaths of people under 50. Of course, for those 70+ the news is not nearly as good ...

It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.

Hard to say because of lack of testing. Increased testing will greatly increase the apparent numbers, but some of that is just catching up. It is such an indictment on our government and healthcare system that we were totally unprepared for this and don't have enough tests.

                            • This is getting very real for my nonprofit. We are in meeting today with our two biggest partners to discuss protocol and options for our Meals on Wheels recipients. We are measuring the different ways we may need to deliver to our seniors and how we can keep volunteer drivers engaged in wanting to continue to deliver meals.

We have started some protocols of drivers washing their hands prior to delivery and after. We have instructed drivers they can leave meals on people's doorsteps, as well.

The reaction from people receiving meals is interesting. We had one person cancel out because she didn't want anyone coming to her home. We have other people adding meals, as they know they won't be going out in the coming weeks.

i have epiphanies like that all the time. for example i was watching a basketball game today and realized pom poms are like a pair of tits. there's 2 of them. they're round. they shake. women play with them. thus instead of having two, cheerleaders have four boobs.
