how is Simmons a surprise? he missed by one vote last time

I imagine he was seen as the most likely selection of all - well, aside from Whitaker.

but Baines I think came from nowhere

Simmons was on the BBWAA ballot all of one time and got booted off with just 3.7% of the vote. I guess ESPN had him as a good shot, but I had been seeing Whitaker and Parker had the best chance.

in 2017, when Jack Morris and Alan Trammell were elected by this same committee, Simmons got 11 votes when 12 were needed.

Morris and Trammell came off the ballot, obviously. so......

Baines never got that close on a Vet Committee ballot.

also, the fact that Simmons only lasted one ballot by BBWAA diminishes the BBWAA - not Simmons, who very much belongs. it was a stupid mistake that is a byproduct of a stupid system by folks who are bad at math.

I suspect plenty of writers didn't expect Simmons to get bounced, though they themselves didn't vote for him because he obviously wasn't a "FIRST-BALLOT HALL OF FAMER."
