  • What's new with you? We're moving to the country

We're in the middle of a pretty major life change. We've lived in downtown Toronto for around 15 years (I grew up here). My wife got recruited for a great job in a small community about three hours away - it's a very cool place that's rapidly changing from an agricultural base to a really diverse area - wineries, cider houses, awesome restaurants, tons of tourism ... it's a leader in the local farm to table movement ... really exciting. It's been written up in the New York Times, Conde Nast, and a bunch of other international publications.

Real estate in Toronto has been pretty nuts for the past decade+ so it seemed like a great opportunity to cash in our chit. We're moving from a three story loft condo to a sprawling bungalow on over an acre of land. Back to cutting grass & shoveling snow (I need to go back & read that snowblowing thread). And learning about things like wells, septic systems, propane, satellite internet & tv, mesh networks, and on & on ...

I'm working on job opportunities nearby ... sounds like something should get solidified in the next few weeks. I'll keep my mini as I'll be going back to driving to work, but we had to get a second vehicle - so a Jeep Wrangler is now in our driveway (damn that's a fine vehicle!).

I'm kind of running on fumes ... but it's crazy exciting! Move date is next Friday.

If anyone is ever around here, let me know ... (the last picture in this article looks very much like our backyard! a far cry from our current view of the condos of downtown Toronto!!!)

It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.

7 hour drive for me - seems doable - place looks really cool for a summer getaway.

Is it a tundra during the winter? I guess you will find out

    good luck on your adventure

If DMT didn't exist we would have to invent it. There has to be a weirdest thing. Once we have the concept weird, there has to be a weirdest thing. And DMT is simply it.

I'm so jealous. I live in the suburbs and I'd absolutely love to get out in the country. Wife and kids will never go for it though...

Last night's conversation was, John Deere or Kubota ...

apparently it gets more snow than nearby areas (being out in Lake Ontario), but also not as cold (the lake moderates temps) ... but you're right, we will see ...

That's great! We also moved away from a city to the country three months ago. We still own properties where we used to live in NJ, so I'm there every week or so, but otherwise, country living is the life for me as well (but not my wife, who's commuting back and forth to NYC every morning -- 2 hours each way, yuchh!!)

We live in in a town close to a small city, and for the most part I dig it. We have more space between neighbors and have all kinds of wild-life around-- we had a hurt coyote hanging out in are yard when we first moved in. We see rabbits, foxes, tons of deer all of the time. It isn't nearly as picturesque or cool as where you are going, but again, mostly I like it. The biggest downside of living in a smaller, secluded place like that is essential travel for medical issues, if you have them. Smaller places like that are not going to have specialists for stuff, so if you have to do weekly or monthly visits for a medical issue, it is a big pain in the behind. Other than that, there is shopping and the like, but most of that you can do online, so it isn't a big deal imo. Oh, but being in a lake effect snowy area myself, I did look into how good snow removal was in this area. I assume it is good there out of necessity, but if not, that mini may need to be replaced (I manage with a Honda Fit myself, but snow tires are essential).

yeah, I find that my mini with snow tires are as good in snow as any vehicle I've ever driven
