Wait, why is it understandable? Historically they have gotten all the big name free agents they have wanted. They deserve about 50 years of nothing before they "understandably" should be salty....

Gerrit Cole signs with the Yankees to a 9 year, $324 Mil deal.

Yowza. I own him in AL Only at $34 due extension, so I'm glad he stayed in the AL, but I was really rooting for the Angels. Nice early xmas gift for Yankee fans.

Very happy Angels fan. They need much more than Cole to contend and no reason to have another Pujols contract. Maybe they could bring in 2 good SP instead on shorter contracts?

9 years for a pitcher is insane, but the Yankees can afford to have dead years at the end of a contract. I would have thought that 6 years would be the maximum...but Scherzer and Verlander must have changed the landscape of pitchers with their longevity. Still has the potential to have Pujols type back years of the deal, not to mention he's a pitcher, and every pitch can be his last for months.

That no title for a decade must have really stung...

With that Yankee bullpen, Cole is about as close to a lock for 20 wins as anyone. Then too Cole is the one guy who can give that bullpen a rest when needed.

Did any other teams even make a serious bid for Cole? Or did they just say forget it when they heard what the Yankees were offering?

Mazara to the White Sox for Steele Walker (who was taken 1st overall in the Porn Star Name draft)

I would guess that several teams offered similar AAV, but once the Yankees went nuts with a 9 year deal, they quickly shifted their priorities. Angels probably are now heavy into Rendon, Dodgers might be MadBum, and maybe Ryu.

All of this means that the Twins aren't getting anyone of consequence, because all starter values have now shot up to the point where they won't pay.

BTW, Cole will now make roughly a MILLION dollars per start.

The Twins, and every other team that was looking for pitching (which is pretty much everyone, including my Jays).

I expect the trading side of the hot stove to get busier now that the main FAs are landing.
It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.

I'm pretty disappointed in the Jays signing Tanner Roark for 2 years, $24 Mil. For a fraction of the cost, I prefer Josh Lindblom or Michael Wacha, each with seemingly higher ceilings. I hate paying so much for proven mediocrity. At least its only 2 years.

Angels sign Anthony Rendon to a 7 year, $245 Million deal.

With Pujols almost finished, they needed another albatross contract to sleep at night.

Lindblom might have been an interesting experiment but the way I see it Roark is there to throw innings and protect the young arms ... better for them to get their IPs in Buffalo as opposed to against the Yankees & Red Sox offenses. Realistically Roark, Wacha, it's not gonna make a lot of difference this year.

Like you said, only 2 years.

I wonder if this means they trade Thor for a CF and/or bullpen help

I think more likely that they're just trying to build some rotation depth, so they don't end up starting guys like Walter Lockett, which they had to do last year. My guess is Wacha is a long man and 6th starter, who will be in the rotation if there's an injury.
