  • Antonio Brown to be suspended

It could be for just a portion of the first game or longer. What a nutcase...

    Per Rotoworld:
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Raiders are planning on suspending Antonio Brown.
GM Mike Mayock reportedly "got into it" with AB on Wednesday and the team is now planning to suspend their star receiver. The news is the cherry on top of a completely wild offseason from Brown and not terribly surprising considering his public disapproval to being fined for missing practice. It's unclear if the suspension will be for multiple games or perhaps just a portion of the Raiders' Week 1 matchup against the Broncos. Tyrell Williams, Hunter Renfrow and J.J. Nelson are expected to fill out 3-WR sets during AB's absence, while TE Darren Waller could also see an enhanced role.

So glad the Steelers got rid of him.

      Million dollar talent/nickel brain.

IIRC, the Steelers were laughed at for only getting a third and fifth round picks. I think losing the headache was worth the lack of ROI.

i have epiphanies like that all the time. for example i was watching a basketball game today and realized pom poms are like a pair of tits. there's 2 of them. they're round. they shake. women play with them. thus instead of having two, cheerleaders have four boobs.

Players have done far worse and not had their contracts voided. He has $30+ million guaranteed. If the Raiders attempt to void his contract, I'm sure the NFLPA will come to AB's defense pretty quickly.

Yes, players have done far worse, but in a way directly against the team that motivates them to want to get out of it?

The term "guarantee" in contracts is often vastly overstated. For example, Zeke's new contract was widely reported as having $50mm in guaranteed money. If you looked deeper though, only 2019 and 2020 are "fully" guaranteed ($28mm), the other $20.5mm are paid out in bonuses if he is on the roster in 2021 and 2022. In other words, not at all GUARANTEED.

In fact, even the fully guaranteed money in NFL contracts is not actually guaranteed in the same sense we use the word. All contracts have default conditions, and based on what I've read "conduct detrimental to the team" is one of those standard outs. It seems relatively easy to prove that for Brown this year.

            Examples of a voided guarantee:

            Fournette -

His suspension due to a fight voided the guarantees in his contract
The Jaguars have notified running back Leonard Fournette that his suspension late last month voided the remaining guarantees in his four-year rookie contract.

            Trent Richardson-

Trent Richardson’s contract was voided by the Colts in 2015. Richardson was suspended for conduct detrimental to the team after he missed a walkthrough and flight to a playoff game, reportedly to attend to “serious complications” with his girlfriend’s pregnancy. Richardson filed a grievance and reportedly settled for about $560,000, or around 18% of the guaranteed money he would have been owed.

            Eli Apple-

Eli Apple was suspended by the Giants for conduct detrimental to the team in 2017, which would have enabled the team to void his guarantees. However, they wound up trading him to the Saints in 2018.

            Lane Johnson-

            PED suspension voided his guarantees

Antonio Brown hasn't been the same since Vontaze Burfict hit him in the head and gave him the concussion during the 2016 Wild Card game.

from NFL Total Access on Twitter:

Speaking on NFL Network Thursday night, David Carr said Raiders captains told coach Jon Gruden they're "fine" with whatever the organization decides in regards to Antonio Brown.

Carr (older brother of current Raiders starting quarterback Derek Carr) admitted AB is liked by his teammates, who have consistently "gone to bat for him" throughout his turbulent summer, but they may have reached a breaking point with his latest meltdown, which culminated in Brown threatening GM Mike Mayock. "They would love to have him back," explained Carr, echoing the sentiment expressed by Brown's agent Drew Rosenhaus Thursday night. "But there's a culture they're trying to establish in Oakland and they're trying to do things the right way. And there's one guy that's kind of holding them up right now." Though the Raiders haven't officially announced Brown's suspension, Carr was adamant the disgruntled receiver would not be on hand for Monday night's opener against Denver. Brown burned every bridge on his way out of Pittsburgh this offseason and now seems poised to do the same in Oakland.

that's SI.com legal expert Michael McCann on this issue. worth a full read, but for a sample:

"The basic legal problem for Brown to contest either a club fine or suspension is that his union and the league have agreed to very specific policies concerning players’ contractual responsibilities. To that end, Article 42 contains numerous rules that players must follow or risk club discipline. Article 42 expresses these rules and fines in a schedule for club discipline."

"The guarantees for 2019 and 2020 are worded with substantial protections for Brown. The team agrees that it would pay Brown even if it cuts him on account of his “skill or performance has been unsatisfactory as compared with other players competing for positions or if he is injured.

"Yet the guarantees aren’t limitless in their wording. Specifically, the guarantees become “null and void” if “at any time” Brown “does not report to Club, does not practice or play with Club [or] leaves Club without prior written approval.” Further, the guarantees are voided if Brown “is suspended by the NFL or Club for conduct detrimental.”

"The NFLPA would likely join in any fight. Even if the NFLPA questions Brown’s judgment, the NFLPA is a union. It is thus mindful of precedent and impact on future players, especially with regard to salary guarantees. Stated differently, if the Raiders can take a heated argument between a player and team executive and use it to void contractual guarantees, other teams would be more willing to impose the same punishment in similar situations."

"The problem for Brown—and, by extension, the NFLPA—is that it appears the Raiders’ sanctions are authorized by the CBA.

Still, Brown could pursue a grievance. He might have about 29 million reasons to do so."

"Brown could charge that he was treated differently—and worse—by the Raiders than other players on the team who committed the same or similar infractions. Article 42 contains a “uniformity” clause. It demands that “discipline will be imposed uniformly within a Club on all players for the same offense.”"

Gruden announced there's no suspension, he's playing Monday night. Much ado about nothing.

I heard that, lol. Mayock isn't looking too good here if they're letting AB off the hook.

Welcome to AB's bizarro world, Raiders. That said, he's still one of the best receivers in the league. But, he can also disrupt a locker room like no one else. Brown will be an interesting season long test of Gruden's patience.

Antonio Brown's kids: "Daddy, why did you call that man a cracker?"

Antonio Brown: "Because, that's what daddy calls front office people who disagree with him."
