    damn, that's a shame.
    It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.

        I always hate to see these kind of injuries but it is part of the game. Hope the kid can bounce back.

        “We’re seeing so many young kids come up, they throw 95, 98, as hard as they can for a full season and then they come back and their arm’s gone,” said then-A’s catcher Stephen Vogt back in 2017. “Our bodies are not designed to withstand that much velocity. If you do, you’re a freak.”

            Pitching over 4 decades sounds like freak territory.

              You wonder if Nolan was in real pain the whole time — or if he sustained the same injuries but never knew it.

                Either way that still qualifies for the Freak Territory.

                    From Closer Monkey, who deserves much credit for following these situations so closely...

                    St. Louis Cardinals – The Cardinals announced that Jordan Hicks has a torn UCL and will likely miss the rest of the season. John Gant and Carlos Martinez are the two relievers who could inherit the job. The Cardinals’ president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said that Gant would be the one to step in to the role, so we’ve shifted our expectations and will give him the nod for now, but will see how the Cardinals adapt in the week ahead before we consider removing the asterisk.

                    Updated hierarchy: *Gant | Martinez | Miller.
                    * = closer-by-committee

                      A sad trombone for Jordan Hicks. Reports surfaced on Monday about his injury and the MRI revealed a torn UCL ligament. He will likely undergo surgery to repair the ligament so his owners should plan accordingly. John Gant should assume primary setup duties with Carlos Martinez shifting to the primary closer role. This also shifts Andrew Miller into potential periphery save chances as well due to usage patterns. There’s no word on if the Cardinals will look to bolster the bullpen via trade, much will depend on how the Wild Card and division races evolve for St. Louis going forward

                        And ESPN..The Cardinals announced on June 24 that Jordan Hicks has a torn UCL in his right elbow, and it seems probable that he'll undergo Tommy John surgery and be sidelined for at least the next calendar year. In Hicks' absence, the team has hinted separately that Gant and Martinez will be the team's closer, with Gant the stronger-performing option of the two over the full season but Martinez the one who has filled in on Hicks' off days more frequently. The team could also go with a committee that might include Andrew Miller, Tyler Webb or Giovanny Gallegos.

                          Carlos Martinez will serve as the Cardinals' closer with Jordan Hicks out, GM John Mozeliak confirmed.

                            Wow, waffle much, Mozeliak?

                            ROTOWORLD: Carlos Martinez will serve as the Cardinals' closer with Jordan Hicks out, GM John Mozeliak confirmed. That was the assumption, but it's nice to have confirmation. The Cardinals could always trade for a ninth-inning option later, but Martinez should be decent enough in the role.

                              Fine by me since I own Martinez in 2 different leagues, and Hicks in none.
