  • Stolen Base Question

Last night M Margot finally stole a base. Then he got adventurous and stole third. However, Kinsler was on first and attempted to steal second during Margot's steal of third but was thrown out at second for the second out of the inning. The announcers said Posey had no chance to get Margot. Margot did not get credit for his steal of third base. Is this the correct ruling on this play? TIA

he was credited with a steal last night. would this be a second one?

otherwise it just sounds like a dumb announcing crew

As long as Kinsler didn't make the 3rd out of the inning, then yes I think it should count. I don't think Fielders Choice would apply and take away a steal.

It's actually been a rule for over 100 years!

"[The year] 1910 saw the first addressing of the double and triple steal attempts. Under the new rule, when any runner is thrown out, and the other(s) are successful, the successful runners will not be credited with a stolen base."

yes, second stolen base. Margot stole second then Kinsler walked. On the double steal attempt Margot was safe at third and Kinsler was thrown out at second.

Thank you revo for the site.

            great get, Revo.
            I'll bet I haven't seen a botched double steal in 15 years.

I see both sides of whether the guy deserves credit for a steal - but rule says no.

              Old catchers know this rule.
If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them. - Karl Popper

The rule seems to make perfect sense. The catcher can’t throw out both runners, simultaneously...so the successful runner shouldn’t get credit because the catcher threw out the other guy.
