2019 PONY Auction

Every year since 2005, Rotojunkies and friends have gathered in Canton, Ohio for the PONY league auction. It's a keeper league that has varied between 15 and 20 teams. We've had a steady 15 for the last couple years, but we have definitely had some expansion talk today. Right now it's a standard 23-man, 2 catcher, 5x5 roto league.

We've already had our lunch break so I have a lot to catch up on, but I wanted to start the thread.

Surprised to see Rendon go more than Rizzo.

And i guess i shouldn't be surprised to see Bauer go twice as much as Kershaw and Bumgarner considering the years that they all had in 2018. But it just seems strange.

I realise I probably overspent on Segura, but I needed a quality SS and needed his SB and BA. I agree with Hacko that speed, SP and closers went for too much. I should have made more of an effort to obtain a closer, but I wanted to spend the money on bats. In the Reserve draft, I realise my attention should be on SP and possible closing candidates. Any thoughts or suggestions are always welcome!

This ended up being kind of a terrible auction for me. It was never going to be good after I paid 2 $10 penalties to buy out bad contracts, neither of which was probably worth it in the end. It freed up keeper spots for a $41 Freeman (probably would have gone around $45) and a $8 Heaney (probably would have gone somewhere between 6 and 12). I know that Junkies like to save their money for the end, but I ended up not even close to having the hammer for my late round picks. I bought Scott Kingery thinking I could play him at 2B or 3B, but my sheet was wrong and he was SS only, so that filled up my UT. Bottom line, don't do all your draft prep on planes and airports if you can avoid it

It always amazes me when the line between 2 guys is razor thin, but the line is there and the price difference is just massive. Kenley Jansen for 24, or Ken Giles for 14? Eduardo Escobar for 16, or Evan Longoria for 4? Jean Segura for 35, or Elvis Andrus for 15?

Somehow even though there were teams with tons of money and few saves, Matt Barnes went for 5 and then Brasier went for a buck.

A decent list but some definite question marks with Lourdes, Jeimer and Nelson. My only real decision was Cain at 27 and seeing that he went for 32 perhaps I should have kept him. I was hoping to get some cheaper steals guys in the auction, to go along with my main target Altuve, HA. Having Robles in my minors eased my SB concerns enough that I wasn't about to overpay for them but perhaps I should have.
My plan was to spend money on a bounce back Altuve(yes I have a problem with having man-crushes) and he went for $2 more than I wanted. And to get 1 stud pitcher and 1 stud reliever while keeping my pitching budget at $100. I also wanted 2 injured value guys in Polanco and Di Di. I didn't save my money accordingly for the end and was left with $5 for my last closer and U and kinda screwed those 2 up. Well, at least the closer.

In hindsight I should have gotten a $1 starter and grabbed my Holland or other guy battling for closer in reserves but you know how that goes. I also got carried away with the Rotowire value on catchers with Chirinos. I think I would have rather gotten a $1 guy and used that money toward another 15 SB guy.
