In a 2 catcher league you wouldn't invest more than $1? That seems wrong to me. Backup catchers get drafted every year and this one even plays other positions. And when he gets the ABs, he's going to help you.

Elias Diaz played just 82 games last year and he hit .286 with 10 HR, 33 R, and 34 RBI. Obviously on the counting stats that's very low. But he was worth $7 because he's a catcher.

I'm glad you mentioned AL only.

Last year... in 30 G / 97 PA, Astudillo had 3 HR, 9 R and 21 RBI. And in AL only (assuming standard 2 catcher 12 team 5x5) he was worth a positive $4 if you had just had him sitting in your C position the whole season. It doesn't take much to have value in a 2 C only league as a catcher. He had value with just 9 runs scored on the season.

In that format, Reese McGuire, who had 33 PA, 2 HR, 5 R, 4 RBI and a SB was just about the replacement value Catcher.

    He played 16 games at C, 6 at 3B, 2 at 2B, and 1 in the OF.
In AAA he played 58 games at C, 42 at 3B, 6 in the OF, and 2 at 1B
In AA, he played 75 at C and 39 at 1B,
In A, he played more games at 1B than at C.

That doesn't seem like the profile of a guy who "can't really play another position".

You keep calling him their 3rd string catcher.

From the time he was called up in August last year to the end of the season he played 22 games. During that time Garver played 17. Why are you expecting Garver to suddenly be ahead of him on their depth chart when it was the opposite last year?

To be fair Garver was out with a concussion.

Garver had 302 abs in 2018. CBS has him slated as the first string catcher.

If Astudillio makes the roster coming out of spring training I would not mind him being my 2nd catcher based on what I have seen here. A lot will depend on preseason hype.

As Gregg noted, Garver and Castro were both hurt last year, which was the main reason that Astudillo was called up to the majors for the 1st time at the age of 26.

Yes, he does play other positions, most of them badly. He's got more accomplished players in front of his at every position...They love Castro, and they think that Garver can hit...so unless one of them get's hurt, it looks like very little playing time for Astudillo.

I suspect that he doesn't make the final 25 man roster, which is why I'm going to let others chase him.

They had him on the mlb roster last week. Too early to mean much at this point. Heck we don't even know anything about what Baldelli thinks of his team so it's all speculation.
