I am sure if u keep arguing you will convince everyone that people who expect Christians to be kind and help people of all races are a huge problem. We all need to push back hard against those tyrants !!

pathetic attempt at misdirection, presumably hoping that no one clicks to previous pages - but what other weapon is left for you, back to the original point?

coincidentally, that's why some try "Hail Marys"

changing the discussion from the relationship between evangelical Christianity and immigration, to whether it's acceptable/morally okay to ask someone to repent, seems to also be misdirection.
It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.

            • the lockstep of bible belt southerners and their historically high support to trump, is not surprising. religion has always been a tool to herd, and is the common rallying cry to subvert radical evil in the name of good. what gave rise to kkk, at its heyday in the 20s klan membership exceeded 4 mill, was white protestant nativist groups.

yes, if you dont get that we are in the midst of evil, with the denigrating of asylum seekers as an infestation, per trump. the caging and inhumane treatment of these people, not just the kids, even infants, but of the mothers and fathers who are being herded into cement floor cages so crowded that people have to take turns lying on ground, or standing on top of toilets to breathe, and are not given even the basic treatment accorded to pow.

half the people charged with watching these people are in a secret facebook group where members are openly hostile, sexist, and treating as less than human these brown people, ergo not human to them, yes you are enabling evil. this is not even an inch less than what happened in detention camps to japanese americans during ww2, except that the degree of defense by apologists makes this time worse. if you feel the need to protest, to apologize for the obvious, we are in a dark time of history, you are not a defender of anything good.

directing which fellow Christians must repent? I only went to Catholic school for 12 years, but I must have missed a class.
Ah, the classic misreading of that verse writhes its ugly head yet again. It has been misinterpreted countless times.

Christians are not to be dissuaded from describing a sinful situation and suggesting repentance is needed. If so, many a preacher would be counted heretic after a "fire and brimstone" sermon.

Rather the intent of that passage was to avoid hypocrisy. Examine yourself, consider your own position and shortcomings carefully BEFORE discussing that of anyone else. It's a wise perspective, something we are lacking still today as many are quick to spout their viewpoints but slow to evaluate themselves. But the self inspection part of the passage does not preclude the second part. The discussion of Christian trends that don't actually follow Christ should not be censored.

It's funny how people try to use it as a universal shield against any discussion of what is wrong in the world, though.

the "classic misread" is to decide that one can or should cross the line from legit criticism of an action to becoming the arbiter who gets to determine who needs to "repent" - it's a word that means something.

Trump was already polling high at that point, but it's interesting that Cruz was the main competition for Trump and he was way back in the pack at 3%. The other two main competitors with any staying power, Kasich and Rubio, were at 2% and 6%.

Bush was obviously getting a lot of love in the polls due to his name recognition. There might be some analogy to Biden there, at least, and perhaps some to Sanders.

In retrospect, it's easy to see that Huckabee, Carson, and Paul weren't going anywhere. That was a little murkier at the time. It seems like a fairly weak field in retrospect, although I don't remember whether I thought that at the time or not.

He wrote an Op-Ed in the washington post ...

Justin Amash: Our politics is in a partisan death spiral. That’s why I’m leaving the GOP.

True to Washington’s fears, Americans have allowed government officials, under assertions of expediency and party unity, to ignore the most basic tenets of our constitutional order: separation of powers, federalism and the rule of law. The result has been the consolidation of political power and the near disintegration of representative democracy.
                              ...
Today, I am declaring my independence and leaving the Republican Party. No matter your circumstance, I’m asking you to join me in rejecting the partisan loyalties and rhetoric that divide and dehumanize us. I’m asking you to believe that we can do better than this two-party system — and to work toward it. If we continue to take America for granted, we will lose it.
                              ...
