  • RHD's Latest Top 150 Roto Prospects ("Pre-BA League Top 20s" Version)

BA will be posting their League Top 20 lists soon, probably this week, so I wanted to post a new list before then.

Same spiel as usual: I generally follow BA's prospect eligibility requirements, which are <=130 MLB AB or <=50 MLB IP. Unlike BA tho, amateurs, unsigned draftees and foreign players are eligible. Also, while BA has a different IP limit for relievers (30 IP?), relievers are eligible as long as they dont have >50 IP. As usual, this is for roto, not 'real' baseball, so pitchers are downgraded some, catchers downgraded somewhat (unless they're elite prospects and their bat will play at any position), and actual closers are upgraded a lot, SB guys who project to get playing time get upgraded some, and guys who either currently are or project to soon be regulars can get upgraded quite a bit. Position listed is their current primary one to the best of my knowledge (correct me if I'm wrong), not the one they're likely to end up at.

I havent yet but I'll do a Google doc w the list and post the link.

Great list, as always thanks for putting this together.

A few quick thoughts based on my knowledge:

    1) I like the aggressive ranking of Franco. However I think for me he's going to be somewhere in the 20s. There's just so much variance for a 17yo, and the talent is so diverse in that low of a level that it's hard to judge. I do like the aggressive ranking though.
    2) As someone who follows the Rangers prospects closely I'm not buying in on Leody from a fantasy standpoint. I think he's much better long term as a mlb player than a fantasy asset. Much of his value is tied up in defense. I'd swap him with Bubba Thompson in this list personally.
    3) Similarly, JPM is likely being overvalued in the industry due to the bonus. I suspect his bonus was inflated due to Ohtani - TX had earmarked international $s for Ohtani and used them on JPM when they lost out on Ohtani. His price was unfairly inflated.
    4) Hans Crouse is a dude. Glad you ranked him on here (and he's far enough away that the ranking is appropriate, I'd put him right in that range too)
    5) Poor Willie Calhoun - the Rangers just aren't giving him much in terms of ABs. And he still doesn't have a defensive position. I'm dubious on his future prospects. Which is a big change because I really liked him as a fantasy prospect coming into the season.

I don't know where I'd put him, but I'm surprised Cavan Biggio doesn't make the list. Decent shot at a 30/20 year with over 100 walks in AA.
In the best of times, our days are numbered, anyway. And it would be a crime against Nature for any generation to take the world crisis so solemnly that it put off enjoying those things for which we were presumably designed in the first place, and which the gravest statesmen and the hoarsest politicians hope to make available to all men in the end: I mean the opportunity to do good work, to fall in love, to enjoy friends, to sit under trees, to read, to hit a ball and bounce the baby.

Kevin Smith, ranked 91st here, could have a similar profile in the Jay's system as a likely 3B (maybe Vlad moves to 1st in a couple years). Hes a level below Biggio, but 3 years younger... biggest difference is name sexiness. Biggio's kid gets a 10 for sexiness, Kevin Smith gets a 0.

He's only 15 months younger. And he has a way worse walk rate. But he does seem to have more scout cred; I think I've heard that Biggio isn't much of a fielder.

15 months is much closer than I remembered, thanks.

I view Biggio's walk rate as a real life skill that will lead to middling batting average down the road. The three outcomes type like Schwarber has a cap on earnings because his approach keeps his BA down. Big value jump for OBP leagues.

The only AL prospect I own that didn't make the list is MIN OF Akil Baddoo. Talk about a sexy prospect name. I love what hes done this year. Started off looking like he didn't belong, with over 50% K rate and sub .200 BA through his first 100 AB or so, though he had a 20% BB rate. He appeared to change his approach to swing more, and cut his K's and BB's while adding hits, and the final season numbers aren't that bad. He's gotten his BA up to .241 while hitting 11 HR with 22 SB/5 CS in 111 games. If he matures into a 15 HR/30 SB guy, I'm very happy.

How far off the list is he? I also own 138th ranked Lazaro Armenteros, but he's struggled with K's despite the .276 BA, and he's been underwhelming on the basepaths (7 SB/6 CS in 76 games)... could be a 20/20 guy at some point, or could increase power and ditch the SB attempts if the success rate doesn't improve. Lots of ways development could go.

Either way, I like Baddoo slightly more. How far off the list is he for you, rhd?

for what it's worth, Fangraphs has him around 135 or so, and Armenteros a half-grade worse.

I like the aggressive ranking on Kiriloff, but that is probably because he is the only prosect of merit I managed to hang on to as I went all in to repeat. Hurts to see how highly ranked the guys I gave are but flags fly forever and all. Still, I've never traded so many great minor leaguers before. We have 20 man rosters and I'm traded 16 of my guys, listed below. It just snowballed once I started parting with them.

I traded Eloy Jimenez, Kyle Tucker, Forrest Whitley, Jesus Luzardo, Nick Senzel, Yordan Alvarez, Taylor Trammel, Mike Soroka, Carter Kieboom, Triston McKenzie, Willie Calhoun, Franklin Perez, Bryce Wilson, Leody Taveras, Brent Rooker, and Austin Beck, all the year.

It's a high starting point for Vidal Brujan but a hitting MIF with 60+ speed would be very valuable in fantasy.

I traded Kiriloff to a rebuilder for his $58 Stanton to make my push for the title. I heard a little negative feedback on that one.

He is going to be a monster.

on this, from the Fangraphs prospect guy talking about the Arizona Fall League:

Blue Jays 2B Cavan Biggio is listed on the roster as an outfielder. Part of the reason we’ve been reluctant to buy heavily into Biggio is that reports on his defense at second base are bad, and this roster distinction seems to corroborate that.

I still like Perez, but starting off hurt seems to have hurt his stock a lot. But since you still have him, I'd hold him to see what he does next year. He is still young and has talent.

He was a secondary piece in a larger deal. I traded Eloy, Carter Kieboom, and Perez for Bauer and Myers for the title push. Bauers gettiing hurt really makes me second guess that deal, but I do have him at a good price for next year too, so even if he doesn't come back in time to help me this year, there is that.
