    James Gunn is exiting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

    The move comes after conservative personalities resurfaced old tweets Thursday in which the filmmaker joked about controversial topics such as pedophilia and rape. Gunn has been an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump.

    "The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him," Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn said in a statement Friday.
    I didnt think it would happen but Disney has surprised me with this move.

      Is anyone allowed to joke about off-color subjects anymore??? Is everyone supposed to be perfect all the time? Is there no "off the record" time allowed for people anymore??

              Twitter is part of the public record. say what you will, and the government has to stay out of it (short of extreme exceptions in the 'can't yell fire in a crowded theater' mode). but you can be held accountable for it by your employer if your comments don't meet company standards.

              it is true that acceptable/unacceptable has changed a lot since 2008-09.
              so anyone with a pulse in his shoes would have hired someone to go through thousands of tweets and delete any 'problematic' ones.

                Yes, this is apparently a common practice. I read about how frequently this is done with the Hader story. I haven't seen the tweets, but in general, I think there is a distinction between things meant as jokes and things meant sincerely. I have a very high tolerance for jokes, so the idea that some bad jokes a decade ago can gt one fired seems to be an example of things going too far.

                Someone should be judged in context, and the context for Gunn seems to be he is a good guy who would never mean the things he joked about. Of course, it doesn't help that he was in a glass house throwing bricks at Barr. Still, there is a difference between Barr's personal, sincere attack on a person, and general jokes in poor taste made 10 years ago.

                And talk about glass houses--the guy who led the charge for this firing of Gunn was the guy who popularized the PizzaGate thing, which I would argue was actually yelling fire in a theater, so it led people to violence with its lies. He has also tweeted,, sincerely, not as jokes, way worse than Gunn. But, of course, he doesn't work for Disney.

                Edit: Just read some of the tweets in question. Not sure I see the humor angle in them, so I can understand Disney making this move, especially in the current climate. I still believe they were bad attempts at provocation and humor, but he was an idiot not to wipe these from the net by now.

                  I agree there is a difference. but you can't work for Disney if part of your persona has been "look, look, rape and child molestation - I can make you laugh!"

                  dark comedy has its place - but that place ain't Disneyworld.
                  and I don't know if Gunn is a good guy or a bad guy.

                  for all I know, he and Barr are both mentally ill.

                    I edited my post after reading the tweets. Regardless of his intent, in the current climate, if those tweets get highlighted today, you get fired. He was an idiot to leave these out there given how common it seems to be to scrub these things these days.

                      I am constantly telling my kids,grandkids - people I work with to not put anything on twitter, Facebook, Instagram.... that could cost them jobs or come back later to haunt them. We just had an employee get fired at work because of something he put on Facebook.


                      I tell my grandkids that unlike when I was there age EVERYONE has a smartphone and is recording what you are doing especially if out in public. Once it hits the internet it is there forever and for millions to see.


                      We have had in the last few years among teenagers - "Sexting" lots of them send pictures of each other in various states of undress. Problem is esp if a 18 year old Senior with young girlfriends it can be label as child Porn. I am so glad we didn't have cell phones when I was a teen.

                        What makes you think Gunn is a good guy? Barr told a joke, she got fired. Gunn told jokes, got fired. I have to commend Disney for at least being fair. I didnt expect that.

                          Barr used humor to make a sincere point. She was insulting a person for political reasons. She did it while employed for ABC. Gunn said stupid things not sincerely 10 years ago while not employed by Disney. And even with all that,.if you check the Roseanne thread, you will see I defended her too.

                          But I already updated my comments once I saw the tweets to say I see why Disney did this. My comments on Gunn's character simply come from those who know him that are defending him. I dont know him personally. Regardless of his character, it was dumb he made these idiotic tweets and leave them out there.
