    NL-Only Keeper Advice (5x5)

    Hi all,

Our keeper deadline is a little less than two weeks away, so I was hoping to get a few opinions on my protections (and particularly extensions). It's a standard 5x5, NL-Only Auction League. 10 Teams, $280 for 25 (2 C, 2 UT, 10 P), we can keep as many or as few players as we like. I had one of my weaker keeper lists coming into the offseason to begin with, and then lost several hitters to the AL over the winter, so I'm not sure what to think about this team.

All players are entering their second season unless noted. Players in their option year can be kept at the same price for one more year, or extended at $5 per additional season.

C Francisco Cervelli, Pit $3 (Option Year)
    C Manny Pina, Mil $1
1B Joey Votto, Cin $22 (final year of long term deal, must keep)
2B Daniel Murphy, Was $15 (final year of long term deal, must keep)
    3B Christian Villanueva, SD $5
    SS Brandon Crawford, SF $8
OF Odubel Herrera, Phi $11 (two years remaining on long term deal, must keep)
    OF Harrison Bader, Stl $5
OF Adam Duvall, Cin $2 (Option Year)

P Johnny Cueto, SF $21 (Option Year)
P Kenta Maeda, LA $10 (Option Year)
    P Dinelson Lamet, SD $8
    P Luke Weaver, Stl $5
P Ivan Nova, Pit $5 (Option Year)
    P Walker Buehler, LA $5
    P Edwin Jackson, Was $5
    P A.J. Ramos, NY $23
    P Pat Neshek, Phi $8
    P Sean Doolittle, Was $6
    P Kyle Barraclough, Mia $5
    P Sam Dyson, SF $5

Minors (free to keep, price listed is salary when recalled):

    - Brendan Rodgers, Col SS $3
    - Austin Meadows, Pit OF $3

    Thank you!

    I like your must keeps.

I give none of your option year players a raise except Duvall. I give him 1 year.

You should just drop Edwin Jackson now so none of his stank infects your other keepers.

I like Barraclough, but in a 10 team I would drop him and rebid him at auction. You might save a few bucks and get a fresh contract.

Love Luke Weaver at his contract.

    Nice team to play with.

Hard to do this without knowing the player pool, such as for the catchers and SS, but here's my take:

2B Daniel Murphy, Was $15 (final year of long term deal, must keep)
    3B Christian Villanueva, SD $5 - dump
SS Brandon Crawford, SF $8 - on the fence...if there are a lot of SS in the pool, then dump
OF Odubel Herrera, Phi $11 (two years remaining on long term deal, must keep)
OF Harrison Bader, Stl $5 - dump
OF Adam Duvall, Cin $2 (Option Year) - keep & extend

P Johnny Cueto, SF $21 (Option Year) - dump
P Kenta Maeda, LA $10 (Option Year) - keep (barely)
    P Dinelson Lamet, SD $8 - keep
    P Luke Weaver, Stl $5 - Keep
P Ivan Nova, Pit $5 (Option Year) - dump
    P Walker Buehler, LA $5 - keep
    P Edwin Jackson, Was $5 - dump
    P A.J. Ramos, NY $23 - dump
    P Pat Neshek, Phi $8 - dump
    P Sean Doolittle, Was $6 - keep
    P Kyle Barraclough, Mia $5 - keep
    P Sam Dyson, SF $5 - dump

Minors (free to keep, price listed is salary when recalled): - easily keep both of them

    - Brendan Rodgers, Col SS $3
    - Austin Meadows, Pit OF $3

    Thank you!
Note that this list isnt as bad as you made it out to be

First note - this is a pretty decent list. I'm almost scared to see how good it was before you had people dealt to the AL. In any case:

C Francisco Cervelli, Pit $3 (Option Year) - Keep, do not extend.
    C Manny Pina, Mil $1 - Keep
1B Joey Votto, Cin $22 (final year of long term deal, must keep) - Gosh, having to keep him at $22 is just too bad.
2B Daniel Murphy, Was $15 (final year of long term deal, must keep) - Gosh, having to keep him at $15 is just too bad.
    3B Christian Villanueva, SD $5 - Dump
SS Brandon Crawford, SF $8 - Keep. He's a near lock to deliver $10-15.
OF Odubel Herrera, Phi $11 (two years remaining on long term deal, must keep) - OK, this one may hurt a little.
OF Harrison Bader, Stl $5 - Much as I like this guy, throw him back in.
OF Adam Duvall, Cin $2 (Option Year) - I'd give him one year. If he has another hot first half, deal him to a rebuilder.

P Johnny Cueto, SF $21 (Option Year) - Toss him back in. If you like him, I'm sure you can get him for less than that after last year's debacle.
P Kenta Maeda, LA $10 (Option Year) - Keep, do not extend
    P Dinelson Lamet, SD $8 - Keep
P Luke Weaver, Stl $5 - Keep. (Wow)
P Ivan Nova, Pit $5 (Option Year) - I'd keep him. Others mileage may vary.
P Walker Buehler, LA $5 - Keep. The Dodgers go through SP the way Spinal Tap went through drummers. He'll get his shot.
P Edwin Jackson, Was $5 - He's on here just to make sure we're reading, right? Heck no.
    P A.J. Ramos, NY $23 - Dumpomundo.
P Pat Neshek, Phi $8 - Throw him back. I'd be attentive to re-buying him.
    P Sean Doolittle, Was $6 - Keep
P Kyle Barraclough, Mia $5 - Dump. Red flags all over on this guy.
P Sam Dyson, SF $5 - Sam Dyson sucks. Sam Dyson sucks. No, I'm not bitter. Bastage. Yes I am. Dump him anyway.
I'm just here for the baseball.

Some nice keepers at nice prices!

C Francisco Cervelli, Pit $3 (Option Year)***********depending upon catchers being available, I might just stick with these 2 for a total of 4 bucks [no option]
    C Manny Pina, Mil $1
1B Joey Votto, Cin $22 (final year of long term deal, must keep)
2B Daniel Murphy, Was $15 (final year of long term deal, must keep)
3B Christian Villanueva, SD $5********good price, but you can do better--dump
    SS Brandon Crawford, SF $8**********keep
OF Odubel Herrera, Phi $11 (two years remaining on long term deal, must keep)
OF Harrison Bader, Stl $5************probably keep if you are a believer
OF Adam Duvall, Cin $2 (Option Year)**********certainly looks like the real power deal---maybe 2 years?

P Johnny Cueto, SF $21 (Option Year)************keep, no LTC
P Kenta Maeda, LA $10 (Option Year)************same as above
P Dinelson Lamet, SD $8****************on the fence--may keep
    P Luke Weaver, Stl $5*******************keep
    P Ivan Nova, Pit $5 (Option Year)***********dump
P Walker Buehler, LA $5******************love him!
    P Edwin Jackson, Was $5*****************dump
    P A.J. Ramos, NY $23**********expensive setup guy--dump
P Pat Neshek, Phi $8***************cheap setup guy, but dump
P Sean Doolittle, Was $6*************always chasing saves! keep
P Kyle Barraclough, Mia $5**************same as above
    P Sam Dyson, SF $5**************dump

Minors (free to keep, price listed is salary when recalled):************* Excellent keepers, both!

    - Brendan Rodgers, Col SS $3
    - Austin Meadows, Pit OF $3
    Bearin' up!

Thanks for the input so far. I think these are probably definites:

    C Manny Pina, Mil $1
1B Joey Votto, Cin $22 (final year of long term deal, must keep)
2B Daniel Murphy, Was $15 (final year of long term deal, must keep)
    SS Brandon Crawford, SF $8
OF Odubel Herrera, Phi $11 (two years remaining on long term deal, must keep)
OF Adam Duvall, Cin $2 (Option Year)

P Kenta Maeda, LA $10 (Option Year)
    P Dinelson Lamet, SD $8
    P Luke Weaver, Stl $5
    P Sean Doolittle, Was $6

I'm mostly on the fence about guys like Cervelli, Buehler, Barraclough and Nova. Buehler I'm leaning towards keeping, but then I could see keeping all three of the others, or none of them.

As far as who I lost to the AL, I had Dee Gordon and J.D. Martinez at good prices among others, as well as Ohtani on my minor league roster before he signed (though him coming to the NL was always a long shot).

Bumping this in hopes of another opinion or two, as our keepers are due this weekend. As of now, my definite keepers should be what I stated in the last post:

    C Manny Pina, Mil $1
1B Joey Votto, Cin $22 (final year of long term deal, must keep)
2B Daniel Murphy, Was $15 (final year of long term deal, must keep)
    SS Brandon Crawford, SF $8
OF Odubel Herrera, Phi $11 (two years remaining on long term deal, must keep)
OF Adam Duvall, Cin $2 (Option Year)

P Kenta Maeda, LA $10 (Option Year)
    P Dinelson Lamet, SD $8
    P Luke Weaver, Stl $5
    P Sean Doolittle, Was $6

I'm leaning towards a one year extension on Duvall. Then I'm still trying to decide which way to go with these four (listed in order of likelihood of keeping):

    P Walker Buehler, LA $5
    P Kyle Barraclough, Mia $5
P Ivan Nova, Pit $5 (Option Year)
C Francisco Cervelli, Pit $3 (Option Year)

Any thoughts on those four in particular (or anyone else I'm keeping / not keeping you disagree with)?

    Thanks!

I think this all looks good. I would not sign Duvall. I dunno what the future of the Reds' OF is. Just enjoy the bargain. I would keep Buehler and Cervelli. With 20 catchers being drafted Cervelli will earn his 3 bucks. With Bearclaw's walk rate and Steckenrider's presence and the lack of saves on a terrible team, I would rather speculate on a different MR in a 10-team league.
