  • 2k20: Fantasy Baseball Magazines

Saw two of them tonight at Walmart. Lindy's and Street & Smith, which looks like the exact same format as previous year's issues published by The Sporting News. So, i'm guessing that S&S took over TSN magazine.

    Lunch and bathroom reading material.

    Seems a month early.

Am surprised there is still a market for these publications.

Something nice about turning the printed page.

I still like to buy books rather than Kindle as well.

With nearly all the top free agents still out there, it seems VERY premature. This is why these mags are useless.

I wouldn't say 'useless'. Sure, in a team context, not very accurate but for the full time players and highly rated prospects, playing time is playing time. And as other's have said, nice to have a page to turn while sitting in the john. Something about the pastels which relaxes me.

Maybe my experience is not the norm but I've noticed that the individuals who just bring a magazine to a draft are the easy mark. They typically don't know about spring training news / injuries and they spend most of their time rifling through pages trying to keep up. And at the end of the draft they are calling out 12 names in a row that have already been taken.

                Exactly!

Ahhh, with online drafts I miss those days. I still can usually tell who those still are, as they tend to take up most of their 60 second allotment when making a draft pick!

Sounds like you just have some bad owners. We have guys who bring only a magazine who know more than the managers with several electronic gadgets sitting in front of them.

Well, with the number of leagues I've been in there are certainly bad owners of all types along the way. And there are exceptions to the rule, but the good owners I've been around who are "non electronic" at drafts don't typically bother with outdated magazines.

                      Again, just my experience.

Sometimes the magazine is just a decoy. It can still be used to check off names, analyze last year's stats, or check position eligibility while ignoring projections and rankings.

I draft in a Vegas sportsbook each year, and for a long time there were no electronics allowed. I'd get to know the magazines intimately, and be able to look up stats on the fly in seconds. I guess I still purchase them out of some nostalgia for a time when they seemed relevant...

Back in the day, I think it was my 4th year playing, the returning champion brought a 2 inch piece of paper and a #2 lead pencil to the auction. It was a 10 team NL only 4x4 keeper league $260 budget. I asked him why. He said to test himself. He won. I think I took second.

                              Thanks!
